Mid-levels Escalator

Description

This 800-meter (2625-foot) hillside escalator series starts from Queen's Road Central, runs to the Hang Seng Bank Building on Des Voeux Road Central, then passes through the Central Market and continues to climb past Hollywood Road to the prime Mid-levels residential district. The free ride from Central to Conduit Road takes about 20 minutes, a lot quicker than walking up. The longest covered outdoor escalator system in the world, the system took two-and-a-half years and more than HKD205 million to build. Be warned that the Mid-Levels Escalators run just one-way; down in the mornings, up in the afternoons and evenings.

Escalate in Hong Kong
By Mum, 3/1/07
A peculiar ride indeed. But it is not just about the ride, but it is about the interesting shops and restaurants and streets along the way. Drop by at SOHO and walk to Hollywood Road. Interesting quaint shops to visit.

It's free. It's different. It's kinda cool!

What's there not to like? If you are in Hong Kong, the escalator takes you through many of the hippest places on Hong Kong Island. Make sure to get off in Soho if you are hungry or need a drink.

Escalatoring Across Hong Kong
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/25/05
One of the strangest "attractions" in Hong Kong is the Central Mid-Levels Escalator. Located in the middle of Central, it takes you up, up, up to a point about 20min walk from the Zoological and Botanical Gardens. It's 800m long, consisting of single escalators under a covered walkway, with stairs beside them. The escalators are turned on "down" until 10am, for the city residents to travel to town. We travelled "up", passing the shops of Central, the international restaurants and antique stores of SoHo and finally reached the top - so high that you can't see the bottom of the high-rise buildings. What a peculiar ride - right among the streets and buildings on a steep incline. From the top, it was a short distance to the peaceful greenery of the Zoo & Botanical Gardens, and with the help of a map, we returned to Central by MTR train a few blocks away.
