M at the Fringe, Hong Kong

M at the Fringe is an institution in Hong Kong -- run by the charming and talented Australian Michelle Garnult who also has M on the Bund in Shanghai (also a must visit!) The food is innovative, fresh and delicious. A great place for a light lunch or a special dinner for two or a group. The restaurant has a great ambience with an art deco feel and a good wine list with friendly service. In a hub near the Foreign Correspondents' Club and the Fringe Club where something's always happening. We love it! It's a real gem.

I went there with my husband and the food was very disappointing. The appetizers were ok but no surpirse... The main courses were inedible - bad meat and severely overcooked. Worse than an economy class meal! I hope we caught them on an off night otherwise I would recommend McDonald's than m at the fringe!

My husband and I were taken here by friends who wanted to say "thankyou" for a past favour. We were delighted as we had heard rave reviews about the place. Not only was my meal inedible...their signature pork dish...it later made me ill. The crackling was superb but there was NO meat. As I was a guest at the time it was inappropriate for me to complain but I vowed never to return.

I'm sorry to review a place with such a good reputation and state that it was awful but that is the simple truth. Three of us went with high hopes having seen it highly recommended in several guide books, magazines etc. However, things quickly went downhall when the waiter decided that, having asked two of us what we wanted to drink, our third member would want the same. Is this the service we were expecting in what was purported to be one of HK's best restaurants? I don't think so! By the time we left we were all agreed that the culinary highlight of our unfortunate evening was the bread!!!! The pasta was so overcooked it was effectively stodgy and inedible and the salmon was so overcooked it was embarrassing. We left $HK1700 poorer and utterly bemused about what had just happened. Could such a well touted restaurant be that bad?! I'm sorry to say the answer is undoubtedly yes. Perhaps we caught them on an off night, I certainly hope so because based on our experience i'd recommend KFC ahead of m at the fringe!!!!
