Very disappointing! Wife received a gift card which has no expiration date. When presented for payment, manager could not locate card number in their records. What a scam! You collect money from someone and then claim the card is invalid. Manager said they would honor it if we had a receipt. How many people give receipts as part of the present.
Food was so-so. I expected a lot. Atmosphere is as others have said...not intimate.
The food is excellent and the service is excellent. The restaurant is very spacious and luxurious and the atmosphere inside is awesome. I highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion because it is pricy.
The food was okay, but just barely. The appetizers were good, with fresh, cold, tasty tuna, very tender yellowtail, and nicely textured pot stickers (though nothing special in the flavors of the pot stickers or sauce). I ordered the curried lamb chops, recommended at medium rare, which would have suited me fine. What I got was medium well, hardly any pink in it, dry and tough at the edges. This, to me, is completely unacceptable in a restaurant that attempts to portray itself (and charge prices) as a premium dining location. The noodles and vegetables contained an uninspired mix of carrots, celery, bean sprouts, and green onions. I did like the way they handled the curry, though - nice mix of flavors, not too hot. My wife's scallop dish was good, but as she said, it was nothing special. Wines by the glass were limited, but the ones we had were adequate. We could only get low-sodium soy sauce - I dislike the flavor of low-sodium soy sauce, but I had no choice (and I didn't use it). The sushi menu looked fairly good, though we only had the appetizers. It didn't look good enough to bring me back, especially not at $125 for two.
The dinner seemed rushed, although we ordered a couple of appetizers and wine. When someone came to refill my water, they splashed water all over the table, then turned around and left without a comment. The waiter was attentive until we left the credit card on the table, then it took a while for him to notice us. In general, the wait staff seemed reasonably competent, but did not pay attention to the little details that make fine dining a pleasure.
Just a personal beef: If this place is going to portray itself as a prime dining destination, it has to improve the dress of its customers. Athletic shirts, gym shorts, flip flops-- there's no point getting dressed up for a special occasion here. But that's Cary for you.
I was highly disappointed and will not go to An again. I was told it had good Asia/Fusion food, but in my experience it was just overpriced, Americanised Asian food, and mediocre at best. I'd rather go to the Vietnamese restaurant (can't remember the name -- Empire?) near the corner of New Hope and Capital Blvd. -- completely unpretentious, even slightly seedy, but with much better, more authentic Vietnamese food, and a friendly family atmosphere. Take a big party and enjoy! Just don't bother with An.
Great covered patio for the Spring! Not sure how I've been missing An, but had an enjoyable dinner there recently. Sushi and service were excellent. Request the two top out on the covered patio in front of the fireplace.
