Big Mamas Soul Food
Southern barbecue is noted as a craft developed over and passed down through many generations. The meat is cooked over slow burning coals or fragrant woods such as hickory or pecan. Add some baked and fried sides and you've got what we Southerners call soul food. But authentic barbecue soul food doesn't have to exist only in the South. Big Dan moved all the way from Alabama to bring your favorite soul food dishes right here to the Palm Springs area.
I love the food here!!!! They have the best fried chicken wings ever!! They are very big for chicken wings. And the catfish was EXCELLENT!! It was the biggest catfish filet I have ever seen!!
I loved the macaroni and cheese too!! I was way too full for dessert, but the cobbler looked incredible.
The atmosphere is really nice too, I loved the music and the staff were friendly and on top of things also.
I can't wait to come back!!! It was so worth the money....... next time I will bring 2 friends to help me eat all the food!!
First time was great and could hardly wait to get back. Second time not as good, third time, terrible. It was like they micro waved the baby backs, had the ribs bottom side up filled with BQ sauce. Found out they were catering and the main cook was not there. Wanted peach cobbler and that was at the catering event. Before going back will call and make sure the main cook is there and will try the fried chicken. Never busy when I've been there & with the inconsistency in the food, therein lies the reason. Do love the BQ sauce though.
I really wanted to like this place - I was hoping to find a good BBQ joint...but this one is average, at best.
They advertise draft beer specials on their banner, and when you get inside, they have nothing on draft. I wanted to order the dinner special listed at the top of the menu, but was told that there are no specials any more...maybe they will start them again in the future.
I went with pulled pork, and it was reasonably well seasoned, but the BBQ sauce was thoroughly average - not a lot of spice or bite. The side dishes were just ok, although I actually thought the hush puppies were pretty darn good.
Worst of all, the prices were simply too high for what you get. There are a lot of hole-in-the-wall places in that area with really good food at great prices - Big Mama's is just too expensive for the market, which is probably why it wasn't terribly busy.
The atmosphere and music are fun, but unfortunately there are a lot of places in the area that offer awesome food for cheap, and Big Mama's struggles to match them for quality or price. Even just comparing it to other BBQ places in the valley (of which there aren't many), it is at best third on my list.
Big Moma's Soul Food! Now that is some down home cooking, small place but worth the wait. You can smell the meat smoker for miles. Absolutely delicious! We can't say enough about the food. If you miss southern cooking and the smell of bacon frying, you should try their fried cat fish, collard greens, mac & cheese. I promise you this you won't be disappointed.
Glad to know someone knows soul food like they know soul food!
I have to say growing up in TX that finding really good Bar BQ that compares to the food there isn't easy, But then I found Big Mama'a Soul Food and fell in love at first bite. The food is great and the staff is wonderful. I try to stop by every trip I make to Palm Springs. Only downside is that the places is small and sometime there can be a wait..
