The Hawaiian name for this park is Laaloa, but it's also referred to as Disappearing Sands, White Sands and Magic Sands. The sands of the beach really do pull a disappearing act when the crashing winter waves come, reappearing gradually as the weather and waves calm down. When the weather is fine, there's plenty of sand on this beach and plenty of people to enjoy it. Bodyboarders, swimmers, sunbathers and picnickers descend upon the pretty little crescent of "magic sand" in the heart of touristy Kailua-Kona.

Magic Sands Beach - Kona - 6500 Block Alii Drive

Want to meet the locals and/or fellow snowbirds?? This little piece of heaven has become my home away from home!!! Only a 5 minute walk away from our $49.00 a night Studio Suite, it's 7:30 a.m. and I join 2 or 3 other "regulars" at Magic Sands. After my quiet, meditation time, "I" watch (I'm a 60+ female senior) and "they" surf. 3 hours later the beach becomes more crowded, but I have already had hours of visiting with amazing, friendly people. It's now mid-morning and time to go cuddle my new baby granddaughter born on this beautiful island only 10 days ago. In the words of Annie, "I think I'm gonna like it here". Messages from home (Western Canada) are full of stories of the busy-ness of Christmas preparations. In 10 days we will be returning to our "other" life. Memories of Magic Sands will go home with me, and you can be sure that VERY soon....... I'LL BE BACK!!!!!

Magic Sands (Tragic Slams)
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/06/07
Summertime this place is pretty calm. Watch out for rogue sets. Never turn your back on the water! expecially in Hawaii. In Winter this place goes off!! On the point you'll see a handfull of locals waiting for the bomboras 10ft + and the beach break, thats where the term "tragic slams" comes in. The left side of the beach is filled with local kids spongin in a small protected area "very small" the middle will crush you if your not looking out, this is where all the action is though. Kick it on the beach and watch the show. The older local kids have this place down. Some very talented individuals in the water skimmers and spongers..will amaze you!..You'll see life guards dragging tourists out of the water left & right when the waves are big. Don't get tricked into a calm looking beach here even the waves appear like magic. a Great place to snorkel out in front of Jamisons Resturant and to the right. Be carefull going in and out! For a mellow day go to Hapuna.

I wish the sand never disappeared
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/10/06
This place is great. It's close to Alii Drive and therefore, not too long of a drive. It usually has awsome body surfing waves it also has a sand volleyball court. But do watch out for some big waves. If there are big waves, the rocks start to show up. It's awesome though.
