Makalawena / Pu'u Ali'i Bay

Description

En route to the Kohala Coast hotels is this pleasant, secluded beach. It is actually some ways off the main highway, 15 minutes' walking distance from the parking lot at the north end of Kona Coast State Park. Because of the abundance of easily accessible beaches in this area, few people find it worthwhile to trek out to this one. The people that do will have the gentle slope of white sand bordered by rolling dunes all to themselves. There are no facilities or lifeguard services.

This is about as close to 'paradise' as you'll find. This beach is only accessible via major hiking, or REAL 4wd driving. It has some of the best snorkeling I've found on the big island, great swimming with wonderful white sand, and is usually mostly empty. If you do 1 special 'out of the way' thing while on the big island, it should be a visit to this beach. Bring water/food, and be prepared to stay in the water for 3-4 hours like I did. :-) You won't want to leave!

Makalawena Beach

I cannot even BEGIN to explain how remote and beautiful this beach is. It took me almost a whole day of asking where it was and the best way to get there and many locals didn't even know. At first when I ventured out to get there I reached a beautiful beach and I assumed it was Makalawena. After a couple hours of relaxing, I noticed people hiking past where I was through these trees and bushes so I decided to follow. After about 30 minutes we finally reached Makalawena and I just sat there and stared at its beauty. The sand was the whitest I had ever seen and the water was crystal blue. I went snorkling about 6 ft from the shore where I saw the most beautiful fish and turtles. I spent all day and I could have spent all year there. There are no bathrooms or food so come prepared and I guarantee it will be an experience you will not forget.
