Lowry Park Zoo
One of the finest zoological parks in North America and one of the best mid-sized zoos in the country, this zoo features over 2,000 animals, including rare and endangered species, housed in surroundings similar to their natural habitat.
I had high hopes for this ride, considering that it is in the same state as the wonderful Kilamanjaro Safaris and the "okay" Rhino Rally. What the experience really boils down to is you enter through a well themed queue, into a nicely themed station. at that point, the feeling that you're on safari stops. A semi-enthused employee takes your tokens,(3 tokens=3 dollars, OUCH!!) and then you board the train?tram, I'm still trying to figure it out. It's a parking lot tram pulled by a tractor type thing, thats how i'd descibe it. The thing pulls out onto a service road and you get to see an empty pen! YAY, the driver didn't even notice, just kept on talkin! Then you see waterback, ok lots of babies there. The giraffes seemed a bit anti-social. and then we made our way back behind THE EXIBITS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE REGULAR PATHWAY!!!! Now i began to feel like I'd been had. the rhinos barn, the elephant house, and a service road seemed to be the "behind the scenes" part that was touted on posters throughout the zoo. By the time we arrived at the end of our journey, i felt a bit dissapointed. 3 dollars gone for views of a couple of animals extra i didn't care about, and the rest could be seen from elsewhere in the Zoo. Word to the wise, save your money. Your trip to the zoo will not suffer from skipping the "new" safari ride.
This zoo is fantastic!! I have been to tons of zoos, including the Cleveland Zoo, and you never are able to get as close as you can at this zoo. The admission proce is reasonable, when you think about the # of animals and all of the things that they are constantly adding. They are opening an expansion of Africa with new animals like cheetahs and hippos soon which will be really cool! The Asia section was just redone with Disney caliber theming and a new aviary that makes you think that you are in some temple ruin in Asia!
I think that the rides should be included in the price, but this zoo is great.
Penguins are coming soon too I read... can't wait to see them. Tampa Bay is lucky to have a thriving zoo!
I always have fun at Lowry Park Zoo. I like to spend at least 4 hours there as there is a lot to see.
Baby elephant this year is really cool. Lots of different food vendors so you dont have to eat fast food.
Childrens area is great in the summer with lots of fountains...bring the swimsuits.
Dont forget to visit the lorakeet feeding area, the birds are very friendly.
I thought the Zoo, although small, was wonderful! The people were friendly and knowledgeable, the exhibits were neat and the restrooms were very clean. The food is standard fare and pricey but good especially at the cracker house. The boat trip was O.K. and I wish they had lions and somethings more exotic but overall it was a nice day.
Lowry park Zoo is a great little zoo in the area. I had a few minor problems in the whereabouts of certain areas. A nice man by the name of Dan in the visitor services department was a great help in all my questions. He knew every last awnser to my questions. He even personally took me to the Safari Africa ride. While walking to the area I asked him how long he had been with the zoo? I figured at least a few years with his knowledge of his job, he replied to me about 3 months. 3 months. I have asked people who have been there for years who did not have half the knowledge Dan had. He is a great addition to the zoo and I hope they treat him right and keep him. I know the turn over at the zoo and hope he is not a victim of that.
Lowry Zoo is a rather small Zoo by my standards I grew up going to the Bronx Zoo. So to start I am not comparing. We all enjoy the Lowry Zoo. My kids, and my grandchildren, the size is managable, benches to take a break, some wonderful exhibits.Very nice experience.
Was expecting far more, as this has been touted as "Voted America's #1 Family Zoo"......by WHO???
I've gone a few times with my younger children, once with all 4 kids. The 'water play' area is a nice feature, and the African Safari theme was still in the works the last time we went.
Not the Worst zoo I've been to (Disney's Animal Kingdom is probably the biggest 'rip off' in the zoo world), but I've seen better.
I have visited Lowry Park Zoo on many occasions and have watched it change many times since I was a child. In my opinion, the zoo is in it's prime. I took my one year old son there and he had a blast petting the goats and llamas, and when he gets a little bit bigger, we will take him back so he can go on the horse ride. He also loved feeding the giraffes, they ate right out of his hand, that was a great experience. In two more days, the zoo is opening a safari ride and I can't wait to go back and try it out. The zoo is undergoing a lot of updates and additions, but that is to be expected in order for them to grow and prosper. When we last visited the McDonald's was closed because they are putting something new in and updating the restrooms next to it. This is a great zoo I do recommend it, the cost is affordable and children are bound to have a great time!
Does the Lowry Park Zoo have a maintenance staff, if so, please tell them to clean the restrooms? The Manatee Area, that was once a great attraction, is in need of repair and most older attractions are just showing their age. Also, pack a lunch unless you enjoy processed food!
