Amazing - Best Views in Carneros
This was a place that we had meant to get to about a dozen times, but just never did.
What a mistake THAT was! This place was great - all around.
First, the location and views are out of this world. Artesa is tucked away in the hills between Sonoma and Napa (rt.137?), and therefore it overlooks both valleys and the tip of the bay.
The grounds are artistically designed to blend into the hillside, and not be 'intrusive'. At the top of the long staircase up, there are a few fountains and ponds.
Inside, there is an art gallery and gift shop, and it is very welcoming and gives you something to do besides 'belly up' which is what too many places are focusing on these days.
As for the wines - well, I knew they were good beforehand! They did offer about 5-10 *other* wines at the vineyard which you can't get retail. These were either smaller vineyard lots, older vintages, or simply winery only specials.
Most importantly, the people that work there were very friendly, happy to pour for you off the designated 'menu', spend some time with you, and generally make you feel welcome. No hard sell here, and it was refreshing.
I send everyone to Artesa when they ask me where to go in the valley.
