Founded in 1973 by former photographer Jack Cakebread, this winery has produced a plethora of award-winning vintages. The winery produces 85,000 cases annually and is best known for its classic rich Rutherford Cabernets, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The entire family is involved with the winery operation, which includes promoting healthy food. The Cakebreads founded the American Harvest Workshop, an annual four-day event that promotes local agriculture and involves chefs, winemakers and farmers. The family also sells organic produce grown on winery grounds when available. Tours and tastings are by prior appointment only.
I had the opportunity to stop at one winery on my trip to NAPA and selected this one based on expert recommendations and desire for a smaller, personal experience. That is exactly what we received. My spouse and I shared a tasting and Brian our tour guide led us around the storage and production area while we tried 6 different wines. The Syrah given at the end was very good, but unfortunately too pricy for us at 50+ a bottle. Brian, the guide, did a great job informing us not only of the wine itself but of any other question we had about wine in general. His knowledge was impressive compared to other tastings where they pour the wine and barely say anything while standing on the other side of the bar. It was a very positive experience overall. I gave the value 4 stars b/c the tasting was 15 with a wine glass. 4 stars for Atmos for friendly and personal experience
Talk about doing it right. We arrived a bit early and the people in front of us were having such a good time... I had to ask them what was in the wine?
Not stuffy at all, we were treated by people that enjoy making the wine and drinking it MORE than bragging about it.
First class wine, the place is gorgeous and the servers (we had 2) were very, very friendly.
You need an appointment - well worth it.
We visited cakebread this past May. It was my favorite stop. Get a map or you will never find it. Clean, friendly and great wine. They even gave us extra wineand fre glasses. I was so impressed I bought a membership and have been receiving 2 of their wines monthly. As I open and enjoy each bottle, I'm reminded of the day I visited the winery. I'm on the east coast but can not wait to get back to Napa Ca and Cakebread.
Although I am somewhat of a fan of the Chardonnay they produce, the experience that I had was one that I would not recommend to others. A few staff members were very friendly while a few were rude to me and my group. I won't go back.
Cakebread is a nice break from the throngs of people heading to the cattle car type vineyards like Robert Mondavi. The vineyard offers private tours and private tastings only. I recommend the full tour of the vineyard. The full tour lasts about an hour, and an expert takes you through the entire winemaking process. The tour is followed by tastings of approximately 6 different wines.
The people are wonderful, and the scenery is beautiful. A Napa Valley trip is not complete without a visit to Cakebread.
