Skyline Wilderness Park
A picnic ground and trailhead at the base of the hill lead to steep trails up to the boulder-strewn valley rim. Hikers and horse riders to the Skyline Wilderness Park are greeted with pretty views of the valley and a respite from the wine-soaked tourist crush of the valley floor. Some moderate degree of cardiovascular fitness is advisable before setting off. Opens daily at 7p.
Overall Skyline is a great place to RV with a variety of options for recreation. On numerous stays our family has enjoyed the hike to Lake Marie where our boys have caught bass (so much for the previous reviewer who didn't!), disc golf, walks in the native species garden, the short trip into Napa for wine tasting, pizza or thrift store and specialty shopping, and the fact that there are showers and decent bathrooms. Our two boys have also enjoyed riding their bikes around the area, although biking isn't permitted on the numerous horse trails, and one has even taken his bike to Lake Marie. The primary downfalls can be dry dusty trails and ticks, and the occasional long-term camper. Potential campers must realize this isn't the Sierra's or the California coast, rather it is a rural hill area and a respite from city life.
Real estate anywhere in the Bay Area is through the roof, even if your house is on wheels. True, the bathrooms were kinda smelly - but everything else about this place was truly lovely, the location is stunning, trails are beautiful and the rate was $25 a night, as opposed to the $40-$80 per night we found everywhere else in the area - and we looked in a solid one-hour radius every direction around San Francisco. Huge thanks to Ranger Robin who went to the trouble to leave us a key, maps and a friendly note for our late first-night arrival. Would be happy to return anytime.
