Hess Collection Winery
Swiss millionaire Donald Hess displays a portion of his magnificent art collection at the Hess Collection Winery. The original stone structures built in 1903 were retained in the new facility, which also includes an audio-visual room, a 13,000-square-foot (1207-square-meter) art gallery and an upscale store. While the wines are simple by Napa standards, they are both decent and affordable. The winery produces two varietals, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Hess Winery is the BEST! We loved our time there with a tour of the fantastic Hess Art Museum and a delicious Wine and Cheese Pairing. Our tour guide for both was Larry who is very knowledgeable about both the wine and the art. We learned a lot about how to pair wine with cheese and other foods and also about the story behind the artists and their work. It was a memorable experience in a beautiful setting. We will be back. We are Hess Wine Club members so we can enjoy the great Hess wines at home. Thank you, Larry, for the great time at Hess!!
We had very high expectations from the Hess collection. A couple of guide books that we had referred to had proclaimed them to be the best in the Valley.
Unfortunately they didn't measure up to our expectations. We are not really into modern art and couldn't really enjoy the art collection. We liked their free tour. We are no wine connoisseurs and weren't really highly impressed by the wines. If they weren't so off the main road I'd recommend going there but personally I don't think I will be back.
After looking at the "Art", I felt so disturbed I needed to drink. Some of the art was like looking into the mind of someone totally insane. I felt the same way I did after seeing the movie Seven.Other Art looked like an elephant had walked through and pooped on the floor. I walked down to some wine tasting eager to think of something else. I tried four wines each one worse than the one before it. It tasted as if it had been left to age in an old aluminum cup. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. The drive there and the grounds were worth seeing, but nothing else. After tasting wines at about 10 different places in Sonoma and Napa, I would rate this as my least favorite.
The Hess Collection Winery Visitors Center demonstrate a skillful blending of vinicultural tradition and modern allure. The individuals who work there create a welcoming tone. The wine is a gem to behold in the northern Napa Valley. Try the Cabernets and the Mountain Cuvee and you'll be hooked forever. A sensual experience on so many levels.
It's more than a winery. It's an elegant yet comfortable art gallery with works beyond anything I've seen outside large city museums. I believe they said that only about 1/5 of the collection is there at any given time, as it travels the globe, so 2nd trips hold further interest.
One will find nothing but delicious decadence and sweet class at the Hess winery in Napa, CA. The gardens and art collection are eye candy and act as fourplay to the power packed wine that will touch the lips of those lucky enough to visit this hidden treasure.
The Hess Collection Winery was definately the highlight of my last trip to Napa. I have been to a few wineries and this one stood out from the rest. After viewing a fine collection of art I was introduced to a wine tasting experience I will never forget. The guides were very informative and the wine was truly delicious. A bit out of the way, but a definate must-see for anyone in the area.
