Rutherford Hill Winery, a premier producer of Merlot, is perched in the eastern Napa hills and boasts a panoramic view of the valley. With a pleasant one-acre picnic area, shaded by 100 year-old olive and oak trees, it is also a popular spot for lunch. The tour includes a visit to the wine-aging caves, which are tunneled into the cliffs behind the winery and used for wine storage. Check the website for tour schedule and prices.

great wine, great service, great view
By Evan, 06/19/07
the tour was great, caves very interesting, beautiful view of napa valley, nice picnic area, reasonably priced with good explanation of the wines. Members club a steal that i signed up for, 20% off, no commitment, 36$ per order of two bottles of wine and their wines are usually 25$ and up so it's a great deal. Also free tastings for you and 3 people everytime you go. I plan on going back a few times while i'm in California for work.

Don't leave napa valley without seeing this place.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/31/07
This by far was our most pleasant experience while visiting the napa valley. We paid $15.00 to taste and tour and had a wonderful time. The tour guide was courteous and very knowledgable, and took time to answer our questions. Our tour group was about 20 people, but we were still allowed to ask questions and had a lot of fun. The caves are amazing! Some of the wines were a bit expensive, but I did not mind paying the price, and I would recommend Rutherford Hill to anyone looking for a first-class winery in Napa Valley. Merlot is their specialty. I look forward to going there again.

Great Port
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/01/06
Gentleman serving wine taste very friendly, cute gifts in the gift shop, interesting- somewhat boring wine tour (liked the caves). The one is O.K., but I really enjoyed the 2002 port. I would go back.

not friendly- ignored us
By amyrdh, 10/08/06
We visited this winery on our own (not an organized tour) and were definitely disappointed. The tasting room had a few people in it and we stood waiting for a tasting and were completely ignored. The grounds were beautiful, and we were interested in seeing the caves, but when we stood in the tasting room/ gift shop for about 15 minutes and were ignored, we decided to move on. I had even picked up some items from the gift shop, but put them back. I would not waste my time on this place.

wonderful tasting room
By Julie M, 11/30/05
A little off the beaten path, but worth the extra gas! Unfortuantly I didn't get to go on the cave tour, but there will be a next time! I recomment the tasting room! My favorite by far!!!

Quiet place for a picnic with a view
By Pablo OBrien, 10/31/05
If you want a quiet place above the valley with view, Rutherford Hill has a bunch of picnic tables in a grove of olive trees. Our two boys enjoyed running around the hill while we split a half bottle of decent Merlot and noshed on stuff from the Oakville Grocery.
