Carnaval de Quebec
Known far and wide as one of the world's great parties, this annual bash in the mid-winter cold attracts thousands from around the world. Bonhomme the Snowman presides over 17 days of ice sculptures, dog sledding, boat races on the semi-frozen St Lawrence River, parades, and all manner of less wholesome carousing. Revellers roam the city drinking caribou; a potent blend of red wine and grain alcohol from Bonhomme-shaped canes. The Ice Palace, just across from the Parliament Buildings, is the festival's headquarters.
We (my boyfriend and I) have been going now for two years, and we're going for our third on feb 9th - feb 11th. We have stayed at two hotels, one being a holiday inn select, which wasn't as friendly, and last year the Delta Quebec, which was fantastic. I'm really looking forward to this year.. We go out every night - and we especially love the following places,
chez dagobert-young hot spot for a great time
put st.alexandre - so many brands of beer, it's beer heaven
cosmos cafe, we go there on saturday morning for whoever wants to skip breakfast and have lunch or those who still want breakfast can have it, it's great.. very cool inside..
portofino-very cool atmosphere, excellent food.. coming from NY it's good italian/french cuisine.
And lastly, my favorite activities at the carnival are the SNOW BATH - so funny to watch - The dog competition - the final night parade.. it's all great, and we'll try to make it to whatever other activity we can - but it's really a fun party that we visit yearly..
I can't wait - if you're from the east coast US, and you're under 21, it's great for you.. I am now 21 but i'm still going for the party, it's great.. hope to see you there!
As a Quebecer, I can tell that the Quebec Carnaval is an interesting adventure on days with so many things to see and visits; unfortunately at night it is a young-drinkers rendez-vous; All the Ontariens under 21 of age are coming to Quebec to drink (legal age is 18 in Quebec in Ontario 21); The real Quebecers kind-of-avoid the Caraval and let place to tourist;
Im From Massachusetts and it was one of the best times in my life! The whole attmosphere is amazing! From the night time parade to the daytime activities. We stayed at the Hotel Gouverneur Quebec, and the service was unbelevable. From the lights to the food, it was a time I will never forget in my life! I cant wait till next year!
