Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA)
Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona is a huge white mass of a building designed by Richard Meier. It combines elements of contemporary American architecture with the Mediterranean rationalist tradition. It opened to the public in 1995, showing a permanent collection donated by Catalonia's other great artistic institutions made up of work produced over the last 50 years. The museum organizes regular temporary exhibitions featuring contemporary Spanish and foreign artists as well as lectures, concerts, seminars and audiovisual competitions.
The museum itself is a stunning architectural monument to modern and post-modern design. Floors are reached by a series of sloping ramps and rooms are entered through slivers of white concrete walls. The entire effect is stark and modern. The plaza is nothing spectacular but makes a great backdrop for viewing the nearby neighborhood, just off the Rambla, with a few choice taverns and wine shops. The Ray Johnson exhibit was modest appearing but quite interesting and important in the art world, and the descriptions of the exhibit were easy to follow in English. For Seven Euros, the place was a nice contrast with the gothic hustle and bustle of the city outside. It was also very quiet, which one will greatly appreciate after a day or two in Barcelona.
