Introduction to Numana, Italy

Back to Numana, Italy Overview

NUMANA, a small port with a large pebble beach, is where you can take a boat to the offshore islets of Due Sorelle (June–Sept, roughly hourly 9am–3pm) for a spot of swimming and sunbathing. There is also the added attraction of a museum (daily 8.30am–7.30pm; €2), filled mostly with relics of the Piceni tribe, who occupied the area between Senigállia and Pescara from the seventh century BC; the extent to which they were influenced by the Greeks, who set up a trading post nearby, is clearly visible in the red-and-black pots decorated with scenes from Greek mythology. If you want to stay, Teresa a Mare, Via del Golfo 26 (tel 071.933.0623; €130–160), and the Scogliera, Via del Golfo 21 (tel 071.933.0622; over €200), on a small headland at the northern edge of the bay, are both modern, appealing places among Numana's handful of two- and three-star hotels. But unless you are set on staying here, you might be better off in Sirolo, where there is also more choice of places to eat.
