Frankie's has much more than ice cream these days. They are now offering pizza, falafel, and wraps, as well as espresso, a nice variety of teas, coffee and local beers and wine. It was recently taken over by a nice young couple who are very friendly. It is usually the place that I hang out when I am in Mendocino.
It is popular with locals, and depending on the time of day, you will find families, seniors, students and young people with laptops. They have a wireless Internet connection and outside seating, as well as an upstairs that usually has toys lying around.
The owners are putting a lot of time and energy into widening the menu, but the ice cream alone, which is locally made, is worth a visit. They usually seem to have around 20 flavors. They have the old standbys, which are unusually flavorful, and often have some rather exotic ones. I think that I have seem mushroom and lotus.
It is a great place for a light, not terribly expensive meal or to hang out and visit with friends or check your email. In the evenings they have music. I have heard blue grass, acoustic folk and middle eastern music there. They have a calendar available and say that they will have it on their website soon www.frankiesmendocino.com. It is a nice place for tourists to rest for a while or locals to meet up.
