I have been eating at Sam Cafe since it was Thai Star. The flavors are fantastic and the service has always been good. Nowhere else do you get the personal touch like you do with Sam. I have tried most of the menu items and I have never been disappointed.
The portions have always been enough to more than fill me, and I can put away a lot of food. Order an appetizer and a main dish and you will be able to eat your fill. However, I do recall that a lot of former customers have not come back when Sam reopened and stopped offering a buffet. For those of us inclined to gorging ourselves I suggest going elsewhere. You will be disappointed because the opportunity to ceaselessly shovel food down is no longer available. If you crave a flavorful satisfying meal, though, you will have come to the right place.
This is a great place to eat. Tasty thai food, try the pad thai noodles. yummy. Huge portions with reasonable prices. And what makes this place really great is Sam. What a cool dude, he really makes you feel at home.
Sam is a cool guy. But it seems like they conserve their food. Couple dining and you might get decent amount of food. Family dining and your portion might be smaller. Good food though. They just get conservative when there are a lot of people.
Sam's ROCKS!! Sam himself comes out to greet you and the food!?? Woah! Tasty with just the right amount of heat. (just enough to make the skin under your eyeballs start to sweat. Sam will ask you how spicy on a scale 1-10.) The portions are good and Sam ALWAYS uses the freshest ingredients he can get his hands on. I recommend this place to anyone who likes asian food, try the combo Pad Thai.....it's the best!
Best Pad Thai in the Central Valley. Very good quality. Family owned and operated. Love this place. One of the few great restaurants in Merced. Would not hesitate to recommend this to any of my friends of family. Sam knows how to make great food!!
Quantity vs quality. Though some meal portions are less than fulfilling, there many that are worth it. I personally love the pad thai combo here (level 6+ usually for me). However, if you truly want the most out of your dollar, go to Peking Smorgi or China Buffet, though be warned - their food are more Americanized, bland versions of what I consider authentic Asian food. I do highly recommend this place for anyone who wants a good tasty meal. Those who are hungry (like when I want to get full off of 3 big macs or something) go somewhere else or expect to spend 12-20+ dollars. The pad thai usually fills me good if I haven't starved myself all day and I would recommend that first for anyone who is unsure of what to get (level 2-3 for you non spicy eaters).
Note that my rating is based on quality of food (5), quantity of food (3-4 depending on what you order), price of food (4), restaurant cleanliness(3), and customer service (4.5) which I average out to a 4, a rating which is great for a town where there isn't any 5 star Asian restaurant - at least for my standards.
