In 1680, a Belgian friar named Father Louis Hennepin discovered a thunderous 32-foot torrent of cascading water that he named St. Anthony Falls. This scenic waterfall was thus responsible for the birth of Minnesota's largest city. Today the falls are well contained by concrete and stone block as well as a series of dams. They can be viewed best from the Stone Arch Bridge or the observation deck of the Upper Lock and Dam.

It's an ok waterfall...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/23/07
honestly there isnt much to see as far as a waterfall goes. you can park and walk on the stone arch bridge to see them. take a tour of the locks - thats more interesting.

Is your interest nature or history?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/24/07
Definitely not for someone who enjoys the typical setting of waterfalls (nature). It is more for someone who likes to learn about the history of Minneapolis. Other points of interest right next to the falls include Mill Ruins Park and Stone Arch Bridge. Mill City Museum and Guthrie Theater are within minutes walking distance away.

See the Falls from the Locks.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/10/06
To appreciate St. Anthony Falls, you should visit the lock facilities run by the Army Corps of Engineer. It's a free 50 minute tour and you get the closest view of the falls possible. The guide told us that the falls have the highest flow in the spring when the snow melt is providing plenty of water. Since I was there in August, I saw them at their slowest flow. The low river allows you to see all that work that has been done to preserve the falls in their present condition and protect the lock.

This is no Niagara...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/12/06
The Falls is best viewed from the pedestrian-only Stone Arch Bridge. But don't expect the power and depth of the Niagara Falls. This is merely a mini falls over the Mississippi River. Honestly, I am more fascinated with the lock system next to the Falls, which is how ships/boats traverse the differing elevation of the river.

Nice intro to Minneapolis
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/30/06
Overall, a pleasant 2 hr walk with views of the falls, river, locks, and the city skyline. Our kids, ages 8, 6, and 3, generally enjoyed it. For the cost of parking, it was well worth it. My family moved to the Twin Cities area a short time ago, and we walked a loop around the falls and Hennepin Bridge (2-3 miles total). The falls are fairly tame, don't go expecting too much. But the historical signs give a great introduction to why Minneapolis was such a good location for a village that eventually became a large city, and how it all happened. Lots of little things to catch your attention - the stone arch bridge, locks, old exposed mill works, Hennepin bridge, etc.

Enjoy a walk along the falls
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/27/05
Set in a historic district we like to take a walk along the falls or even take a horse and buggy ride throught this historic area. I recommend it for a romantic evening. Even thought you're in a big city the area has a small town feel. Enjoy!

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/25/05
it's cool to see the falls, and learn about the way and reason they are ilke they are today. i love the river, and it's fun to watch the water flow over the falls, and learn how the power of the falls is used.

No big wow factor, but take family anyway
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/16/05
If you just need a nice break from a hectic schedule this is a nice place to go as any kids will love it here and as long as you keep expectations low, it's still fun to go see a waterfall. Good location makes it easy to get to. Ford dam nearby. Overall a great outdoor excursion right in the city.
