Murphy's Landing

Description

Nestled on an 88-acre wooded site along the Minnesota River is this living history museum. Costumed guides representing 19th Century pioneers provide an interesting glimpse of immigrant life in rural Minnesota. Settlers demonstrate crafts and chat with visitors about daily life in the 19th Century. This unique collection of 40 buildings represents the homesteads of the many settlers that forged a life in the Minnesota River Valley between 1840 and 1890. Visitors may tour a fur trading post, two farmsteads, a country schoolhouse, shops and homes, all depicting a typical settlement. Guests may walk through the village on foot or opt for the horse-drawn trolley. Period music and entertainment is presented by the faux-pioneers. The site is decorated for the holidays and special events take place throughout the season. Call for information regarding group rates and special event information. Murphy's Landing is west of Valleyfair , about 40 minutes southwest of downtown Minneapolis.

A history buff says \"It was incredible!\"
By ,
I'm a total history-lover. I have been reading Laura Ingalls Wilder books since I was 5, and Murphy's Landing was able to take me back to a time that I enjoyed reading about, and now got to expirience. I made a traditional jump-rope and balls out of wool. During "Folkways of the Holidays" I enjoyed seeing all the different cultures of a 19th century town come together. I met a baby lamb and learned how to make amazing German Christmas decorations. Murphy's Landing was a great way to expirence the good days of the pioneering ages.

Go back in time...
By ,
Our family (kids ages 8, 6, and 3) went on Memorial Day 2005, when there are a few extra activities going on. Some "civil war veterans" joined in for Memorial Day, and we spent about 20 minutes checking them out. I thought my wife and I would like it, but that the kids would get bored after an hour or so. But after almost 3 hours, they didn't want to leave when we asked them! The volunteers are mostly very good at staying in character, and their stories and information can add a lot to the experience, so ask them questions. Our kids got to help wash clothes, plant some seeds, and so forth, which kept them interested. Very informative history lesson.
