Down Under Dive Shop
A full service dive center that offers daily dive and snorkeling charters to local wrecks and some of the most exciting structures in the area with depths ranging from 15 feet to 130 feet. They also offer PADI and NAUI instruction, as well as snorkeling and scuba equipment rentals.
Two of the reviews here were by 1 employee. Both give it all 5s even though customers are mostly unhappy. Me too. They are clearly in it for the money, i.e. the business is struggling. Taking a boat full of students out when a hurricane warning is imminent is just unsafe.
I went on a snorkel charter with my husband and two teenage daughters. What a disappointment it was. They took us to a place that I could swim to myself. I understand that they can't predict what is going to be in the water, but with so many people that was swimming there from shore, the only thing there were hermit crabs. When it was over they asked us to tip our divers. The divers did nothing but show us how to blow up our life vests...why would I tip them??? It was a HUGE disappointment to me and I do NOT recommend Down Under Dive Shop to anybody. It's $180+ down the drain.
Employees were rude and unfriendly. Even my teenage boys said how grumpy the employees were. If you don't like what you do, find another job. It is customers like me and my family that keep you in business. The manager/owner should spend more time training their staff in customer service. Prices were fair but I doubt I ever return to this shop for any of my dive needs.
We booked a snorkel trip through Down Under Dive Shop that used the San Roc Cay Marina in Gulf Shores, AL. When we got to our dive site, the assistants put on wet suits, which I viewed as a red flag. Sure enough within 5 min. a girl got stung by a jellyfish! Soon, everyone had jellyfish stinging marks on their bodies! The crew offered Windex to reduce the stinging, however, they did not offer another snorkel site. Instead, the captain took us to see dolphins and tell sea stories. I had the distinct impression te crew knew about the jellyfish and let us snorkel anyway. Painful and disappointing!
The staff and crew at Down Under Dive Shop went above and beyond my expectations! I highly recommend this place to any diver looking for a nice fun exciting dive experience. Look for James, he is a very nice guy and enjoys his job very much.
All I have to say is if you want professional dive service go to THE REEF dive center in Orange Beach,. Al, or BAY BREEZE dive center in Gulf Breeze,Fl.. I have used them both and received great service, and better prices than any place else.BOTTOM LINE.
Paid for a 6 hour charter and received a 4 hour. Also prices charged for rental gear are higher than what is listed on their site. Dive master is ignorant and thinks he is God's gift to the seas. Dive Assistants and captain were great and helpful.
I have been working at Down Under as a PADI instructor for seven years now. They are my family. Bryan, Shane, Brandon, Mitch, Marci, Mike, Steve and Captain Garrett are at the top of my Christmas list every year. We are constantly furthering our training to better ourselves and keep our skills sharp. Last year I became a certified Gas Blender and First Aid Instructor. This year I persued cave diving and purchased my first set of double tanks. Next year I'm continuing on into technical diving. Bryan will be a Course Director and we'll begin training instructors in our shop in '08. I'm not sure what we did to upset the one person who wrote poorly of us. We are not perfect. We are real people. We take pride in our jobs and attempt to right any wrongs. We strive to make all customers happy and go over the top with service at no extra charge. Come dive with us and see if you don't find the most friendly, professional, fun dive shop on the gulf coast!
They have a custom built dive boat with fresh water showers, hoses, dunk buckets, bottled water, cool-aid, and a pineapple is served between the dives! They even drove my tanks and equipment from the shop to the boat for me! They really aim to please, but do not sacrafice your safety just to make a buck. (I've booked more than one trip that was cancelled due to high waves.) They are the most experienced crew on the Alabama Gulf Coast and I will be back again and again! Diving the Gulf presents some unique hazards: there is always current, it's just a question of how much; the best dive sites are between 60 and 100'; the wave action can be choppy making entries and exits a challenge. But it's worth it! The wrecks are the best! Schools of game fish surround you as you descend, octopi and tropical fish greet you on the site, and occassional shark glides by on the edge of visibility...and Down Under makes meeting the challenges safe and fun! From the way they take care of you from the moment you walk in the shop, to when you drive home from the dock is amazing.
