The west side of Tucson isn't exactly teeming with great restaurants, so it's really nice to have a good one that isn't outrageously expensive. This small restaurant (~12 tables) is run by a family. You can see the entire kitchen from the colorful dining room. My wife and I have eaten there 5-6 times and have never been disappointed by the food. It's basically family-style Mexican fare, but above average in quality and presentation. (Tucson is the southwest's capital for Mexican food, so being above average in this category is noteworthy.) The specials are always worth checking out - once they offered the best pork adobado we've ever tasted. Service is always friendly and efficient. For some reason, this restaurant seems to draw a larger crowd for lunch than dinner; the menu is essentially the same for both meals. Bottom line: San Carlos Grill is a close rival to Mosaic Cafe for having the best Mexican food west of downtown.
