Acclaimed chef George Morrone - the creative force behind Aqua, the Fifth Floor, Tartare, and the only chef to earn four stars at two different restaurants, introduces Boca - a steakhouse inspired by Morrone's Argentinean heritage. Boca specializes in meats with Argentinean accents. A wood burning oven fires signature dishes such as empanadas, Argentinean-style house made sausages, and both grass-fed and corn-fed steaks are fired. Additionally, fowl, fresh fish, soups, and salads are offered. Famous restaurant designer Michael Brennan (Tartare, Cortez) designed Boca to elicit the feel of a rustic Estancia (a ranch found in Southern Argentinia). Boca spotlights unique wines and small producers. The list has a strong emphasis on local producers, and a focus on Argentinean and Spanish varietals. Bring the whole family to experience a children's menu, which includes a dessert cart made of house made ice creams.
Had an early dinner Saturday nite with a friend - the waiter was rude from the moment he came to the table. I had never been to the restaurant before, I thought he was just off his game and would come around - but he didn't and it was very unpleasant trying to get information about the menu from him. Every question seemed to irritate him and when he did answer, he gave minimal information. It was a true mystery and I could have shrugged it off if the food had have been better. The prime rib was salty and chewy, duck fat fries disappointing, the sauces had little taste and too much salt and the lemon sabayon (there version of creme brule) was really lemon curd with a crust - yummy though. All in all, I won't return. Who needs the attitude with dinner, I wanted a nice quiet dinner with my sweetie.
Four of us went to dinner on Saturday night 8/23. Much to our surprise the menu is very limited, unless you are a red meat lover. We all had a difficult time finding something to select off the menu, it's very limited. Also everything was very salty, and lacked seasoning. To many sauces that lacked flavor.
Just had my birthday dinner at Boca and everything was great! We had great service from Edward, he made the right suggestions and made dinner fun. The Hanger steak was unbelievable as well as the sauces that came along with it. I had the Snapper/Prawn special and it was excellant. From our constantly refilled water glasses, to the crusty sourdough bread, to the impecable presentation of our meals, I loved it!
The steaks here are excellent. The sauces go great with the steaks. I love the pickles they offer, it's so unique. Their desserts are great too. I live in Southern California, but have come up to San Rafael for business and pleasure. Practically everytime I'm in the area, I go this restaurant. I only wish they had one in Southern California. Everybody I've taken to this restaurant also has a great time. I highly recommend this restuarant.
i was expecting a lot knowing the history of the owner/chef (chef at aqua and the 5th floor) and was pretty dissapointed. the empenadas, duck fat fries, and creamed corn were the best things on the menu. the steaks were ok - not nearly as good to any other aregentinian steaks i have eaten. i definitely will not be making the journey to novato to eat here again.
