My wife and I had great food and great service at Eleven City Diner yesterday. Our wait staff was very friendly and engaging (without being intrusive). We had seen Eleven City reviewed previously on Check Please and took advantage of the opportunity to eat there following our attendance of Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drinking performance. We both had the Reuben that was recommended by our waitress and we were both very pleased with the food.
I read some of the earlier reviews and while I will agree that the food is a little on the pricier side, both my wife and I thought that the atmosphere and service were well worth the difference. If we were looking for lower prices then we would probably go to a more traditional deli.
In terms of the staff, I can't account for the bad experience that the previous visitor had, but I was personally impressed by the ownership that each of the people we encountered took for the quality of bot the food and service.
We will definitely be back when we return to Chicago again.
I took some friends there on Saturday afternoon and went to use the ladies room was yelled at by a waitress saying the restrooms were for customers only! I had just paid an $80 tab! Then when I asked to see the manager, instead of simply apologizing for the misunderstanding he continued to be rude and insulting! I AM SO DISAPOINTED!
GO TO MANNY'S!! Better food, friendly people and bettere prices.
Think of it as a jewish deli fusion restaurant. Staff was wonderful, food was great. Eclectic selections. A little pricey - but not too bad. Corned beef sandwich, french dip, pepsi's 2 desserts and coffee $50.00. But I'll go again.
First time in. Took the parents. Eleven City Diner was great. There is something for everyone. They have a great and varied menu of classic deli sandwiches and a full bar.
Brad the owner moved us from the back to the front window. He didn't have to do that. He really made us feel comfortable. Thanks for taking care of us. That was really cool.
They have full bar which we ordered some Bloody Mary's. Hit the spot. The food was very good and you got a lot of it. I had the Turkey Pastrami. Two thumbs up.
The decor is not some greasy spoon diner. It's a real step up. Almost from the 30's or 40's. Really liked the whole vibe. Great job to the owners who put this place together.
If you are looking for a great, classic diner, Eleven City Diner is truly the best I've been to in Chicago. The place has all the right touches; from the old-school bar stools and counter to the candy store in the corner. The menu had all the classic sandwiches and sides. My friends and I headed there for lunch today. I had the chicken soup first. It's was like a little old Jewsih grandmother made it herself. I had a patty melt that just melted in my mouth. It was huge. Topped it off with a killer slice of Carrot Cake. Everything was just right. Very impressed with the way this place was put together. The owner, Brad Rubin, introduced himself, made sure were we taken care off. He explained the whole concept to us and really cared about our thoughts on the joint. That was nice touch. Brad's staff, from the hostess who sat us, to the waiter who served us, really made this a first rate deli experience. It was way better than we expected. Thanks
Yeah, will not return. Pretty horrible food. Really bad service. The waitress sat us in the corner and pretty much forgot about us. Ridiculously high prices. 7 dollars for a milkshake?! it was watery and I could not taste the chocolate. The waitress told us there were no free refills either. She complained about her low tip and the owner followed us out of the restaurant and yelled at us. We simply stated that she had not earned a higher tip. We also reminded him that a tip is not required and if he wanted something added to every bill, then he should add in gratuity for us. I saw people say something about people of color. They definitely sat us in the corner when there were all these tables in the front for us to sit. Just a horrible experience.
