I have been trying out many of the area's Mexican restaurants, and though there are many of which I haven't tried, and the ones I have eaten at were good, but they were not at the level of Memo's Taco Mex!
Regularly, I order carry out of a dozen tamales to share with my friends and hands down, they are very fresh and delicious. I have tried every flavor and I just love them all.
When I eat there, I order the steak tacos on corn tortillas and they are very delicious. I love how they load it up, and the steak is perfectly done and spiced. The rice and beans are great and their guacamole is perfect. I cannot wait to try some of the other dishes, but sometimes I stick to my favorite.
The staff is courteous and polite and the service is good even when the place was busy.
Owned by one of the nicest families in the country, Memo's is an absolute delight. The food as many other reviewers have mentioned is top quality and absolutely delicious. I have eaten Hispanic food since I was just a kid here in the Region and when I lived out in California as well. I can honestly say that at no other restaurant have I been treated as well nor as satisfied with the dishes. Other reviewers have commented on the price of the food. Well, it is not cheap but the prices are perfectly comparable to any of the other good restaurants in the area. Yes, sometimes one has to wait awhile for a table (I advise arriving early) but the fact that so many people will wait when there are plenty of other Mexican restaurants in the area, should tell you something immediately. If you like Hispanic dishes like I do, make sure to stop in at Memo's. You won't be disappointed.
The place was pretty packed this Saturday but the service moved fast and we didn't have to wait very long to be seated. Not much of an atmosphere but it was really clean, which I liked. Some Mexican restaurants look pretty dirty. The staff was very polite and the food came out quick.
I had a pork and a steak taco and both were delicious, as were the beans and rice that came with the taco special. The guacamole was really good, it was fresh and was not loaded down with filler. Sometimes places add sour cream to spread out the expensive avacado but, Memo's didn't seem to overdo it. It was great! My boyfriend and I split a tamale and now I will have to be certian to get some more of those next time I go, they were awesome.
The prices were fair, compared to other places but the food was better quality. It was also nice that when we left, the owner asked us how everything was, told us to enjoy our afternoon and thanked us for coming in. Found my new favorite mexican joint
Sorry to say I have to adjust my review now that Memo has decided to stop serving menudo. I understand the limited amount of customers because of the unfamiliarity with this rustic dish, but without the menudo i see no reason to go out of my way. Damn shame too because they still have some of the best tamales around.
I'll let my previous review intact below, in hopes that Memo reconsiders his decision on Menudo.
Memo's is wonderful for it's Menudo and Tamales. The most authentic anywhere (except the family's Chicago location). Although I live in the heart of Chicago, I find myself traveling at least twice a month to enjoy the most delicious & authentic menudo to be had. It's restorative powers from a long night are a well deserved reputation, and the green tamales (my reccomended choice as an accompinment) can't be beat. The 'carnitas' (fried pork) are also wonderful, not the best I've had but still good.. Although the service can be slow - there are no language barriers and the quality of the food is unsurpassed. It's small, seats about 25 or so, but this just gives Memo more time to concentrate and oversee the quality of the food.
It's not a bad place, but certainly doesn't merit 5 stars like most people are giving Memo's! I have to question those people's taste in food! To begin with, for what you get, they are priced too high. The food is nothing to really rave about. There is nothing really special to rave about and to recommend to anyone. It's fresh for all I know, I'll say that much, but for true authentic taste, you won't find it here.
