Pacifico- New Haven, CT
Our new restaurant in the heart of downtown New Haven serves extraordinary Latin-influenced cuisine by the proprietor; renowned chef, teacher and cookbook author, Rafael Palomino. Along with traditional Tapas, his signature dishes include Seafood Paella and Dulce de Leche Cheesecake and a special Late Night Menu. The New Haven Advocate raves: The warm, human buzz in the two-floor-high space plays off the colors and the open kitchen to create an emulsion of atmosphere that is more than the sum of its parts.
EEKS - a MOUSE!!! Went to Pacifico for first time on Saturday, 1/28/12, and was shocked to see a large gray mouse while waiting to order. We were sitting on the 2nd floor dining room against the wall and my girlfriend was sitting on the bench when I saw a large mouse dart out from behind the bench, over to the empty table next to us, and then back behind the bench. It happened a few times and when the waitress came over, we told her and then she saw it too. She had a few waiters come over and put cardboard behind the bench and under some wide gaps near the floorboards in the front corner. Unbelievable! We could have screamed and the whole place would have evacuated, but we remained calm and decided that we were too hungry to go find another restaurant. Unfortunately, we should have left when we had the chance because the food was way overpriced for the small portions. My girflriend had the sea bass which was not good at all. My mojito which they gave me to keep me quiet about the mouse was good, though. We won't go back, that's for sure! Not a positive experience, and we'd rather not think about what else goes on if mice are running around the dining room with patrons there on a Saturday night!
Just had a wonderful tasting delicious meal at Pacifico. There were 5 of us and one party member owns a restaurant and raved this place was fabulous! We had some tapas-the guacamole with lobster and crispy oysters were one of a kind as were the calamari salad and beet salads. For entrees we had the skirt steak, scallops and shrimp with ravioli and the tuna with forbidden black rice had us almost liking the plates to just get some more. Dessert was the flourless chocolate cake, dulce de leche cheesecake and flan had wonderful presentations. The service was fabulous and very attentive as we were there for almost 3 hours enjoying every minute and the ambiance. Juan Carlos is one of the best servers we have had wait on us is a long time-and we all eat out a lot!!! Ask for him when you go-highly recommend making reservations and they cater to time constraints-for a show at theShubert! Hope you all enjoy it as much as we did! Looking forward to going again...Sometime very soon!
My girls (19 and 21) and I thoroughly enjoyed eating at Pacifico. The atmosphere was very hip and fun. We had their Caramelized Salmon dish and it was so good. We also had their Coconut Shrimp as a appetizer and it was phenomenal. We had two desserts the Coconut pound cake and the semi-chocolate cake and they were Very delicious. In addition, I had their Three Olive Chocolate Martini for my dessert it was the best ever and very aesthetic as well as all of the food. Kudos to the chef and bartender. We will eat at Pacificos EVERY time we visit New Haven.
I agree that the atmosphere is something special if you haven't been to an Ethiopian Restaurant before. Sharing your food, eating with your hands, the rich and spicy food are all really great. However, if you have eaten elsewhere... you'll realize that the decor is mediocre the spice in the food is not controlled very well and the food is average. I still recommend going if you want to try an entirely new experience. Let the waitstaff know it is your first time and they will help you through the menu and eating your meal when it arrives.
