Hot Basil Thai Cafe
Hot Basil Thai Cafe is owned by Matt Malahan and Juntimar Kedjumnong. Matt and Juntimar met in 1997 at the International College of Hospitality Management. They moved together to Providence. RI so that Juntimar could pursue her Masterac2s degree at Johnson & Wales University while Matt attended Northeastern University in Boston. After graduating they spent one year living in Miami, FL where Matt worked in the kitchen of the Five-Star, Five-Diamond Mandarin Oriental hotel. After returning to Connecticut to be closer to their families they found a void in the quality of Thai food offered in the area and decided to do something about it. Both Matt and Juntimar have a background in Hospitality Management and Matt has spent more than 10 years working in the restaurant industry. Juntimar was born in Sukhothai, Thailand and came to the U.S. in 1991 to pursue her education. Matt and Juntimar have recently taken two trips to Thailand and have eaten their way from her hometown of Sukhothai to Bangkok to Ko Samui and more.
We were twice a month regulars since it opened-- loved it. Then one night made the mistake of bringing an old bottle of wine with a little left in it, and a new bottle. There were two of us, but only I drink. I expected to be charged the $5 fee. But they charged me $10! I had less than two glasses of wine total to drink. I talked to the waitress, and the hostess. They knew us as regulars. We got nowhere. Even the other guests were astounded.
One drinker, one bottle opened, $10 charge. That was it for us. We have not been back since.
We were dining regularly at Hot Basil's since it was the best Thai in the area, until they kept raising their prices. Last year the majority of entrees were $14.00, eight months later the same entrées went up $7.00! That’s just crazy and greedy!
Also it’s BYOB but they will charge a $5.00 corking fee even if you uncork your own or have a twist bottle. That’s another issue that bothers me. Also the wait staff are young girls who are very inexperienced and act confused if you ask them a question on how a dish is prepared.
Also there’s no atmosphere and the Interior is small and boring.
