Average Thai food, but let the buyer beware...this food is overpriced! Pad Thai, a typical noodle dish runs for over $10.00 per person. In my opinion that is way too much for noodles! And as other readers have expressed, there are better alternatives at cheaper prices and fresher food.
We have tried this newer Thai restaurant twice and were not too impressed either time. The owner is very nice and cordial but the many dishes we ordered lacked quality. For example the chicken wings still had small feathers on them and the pineapple fried rice and spring rolls had an overload of black pepper (reason unknown) and when we complained about this and the waitress said that is how they spice these dishes. The Pad Thai was good. Decor is nice and the restaurant is clean. We just could not connect with the food after two visits. I realize this is not consistent with the other reviews but we are not going back for a third try!
I love going out for Thai but had to travel all the way to Berkeley or SF for a good restaurant. Not anymore. Bangkok 101 opened in my neighborhood this past fall and its now my favorite place for Thai. I agree with a previous reviewer, the pineapple shrimp curry is outstanding. I also enjoy the pad Thai. The chicken satay alone is good but dip it in the peanut sauce and it is sublime. The stuffed chicken wing or angel wing is a great appetizer. The preparation of the duck isn't always successful but even on an off day, it isn't greasy. Order the sticky rice with mango when available. The coconut ice cream is another winner. Portions are small compared to other restaurants but quality is much higher. The freshness of the food and the careful preparation really make this restaurant a find. They have successfully preserved the exotic flavors of Thai cuisine while appealing to the Western palate. Other Thai places tend to tone down the heat and up the sweetness level. Presentation is also done with care and not just piled on the plate. Bangkok 101 is a small S. Cal. chain but is run like a mom-and-pop operation. The friendly owner acts as hostess and is almost always at the restaurant to greet you at the door. The place is new but is already packed at lunch with suits and with couples or groups at dinner. I try to go for a late lunch or early dinner to avoid the crowds. Take-out can also be a wait during the rush. Only quibble, the place is small so they have packed in the tables. Not bad if the neighbors are friendly, we've traded ordering tips; but not good for a date and you're trying to be romantic. Try to ask for the odd little nook by the kitchen wall if you're a couple, you may be shielded somewhat from the rest of the dining room. Decor is upscale enough for you to bring a business group. Also warm and cozy for dates; would have been even better is they had some booths for some privacy. But don't be afraid to bring kids and family. They use real cloth napkins and glassware but the tables and chairs are sturdy enough to withstand my 2 yr. old nephew. Also, banquette seating is the most comfortable with cushions.
Awesome shrimp in pineapple curry. My favorite place for pad thai. I also like the coconut and mango ice cream. I like the section on the menu where you can mix and match. You pick from a list of sauces and add your choice of chicken, pork, beef, seafood, or tofu. Also have the typical Thai dishes. Only disappointment, stay away from the fried appetizers.
A great restaurant for either a casual family night out or a dinner date with your significant other. Ambiance is casual elegant, warm and cosy. Dark wood tables, real cloth napkins, comfy banquette seating along the back wall.
Very friendly owners though service is inexperienced and can be slow when the restaurant is full. Lunchtime is crowded with business types.
Wish they had outdoor seating.
I have eaten thai for a few years but my wife has never tried it. I brought some thai food home from Bankok 101 and now my wife is a convert. We can also find dishes that the kids like. The owners are extremely friendly and service oriented A+++
