Teocali was established in August 2006. We are centrally located in Kansas City in the Crown Center District. The restaurant is a vision of founders, Enrique & Chela Gutierrez, of bringing truly authentic Mexican cuisine to the Kansas City metro area. Many times authentic Mexican recipes are changed in the United States to entice a wider customer base. However, at Teocali, we use the same recipes that have been in our family for generations. So, when you dine with us youac2ll always be confident that youac2re eating authentic Mexican food.
I read a lot of great reviews about this place, and thought it would be amazing. We were horribly deceived. Firstly- the location is a bit on the shady side. There aren't a lot of businesses around it, and it was poorly lit- a little difficult to find for us first timers. I thought we should still look into it because it looked little, cute, and family owned. We really wanted to give it a chance, despite the fact that we went on a Friday night, so it was busy, but it was about 9 o' clock, so things were beginning to calm down. We saw our server approximately 2 times. She greeted us and took our drink order, and stopped by to get the check. So as much as I wanted to eat more of their salsa-which could have used more cilantro and onion- we weren't served any more after the first bowl. We also ran out of drinks very soon into eating the chips and salsa, and didn't receive refills until after we were about half way through our meal. Then, our food was brought out-not by our server- and my husband's burrito, topped with queso, seriously tasted like it was ballpark nacho cheese. Horrible. I got the spinach enchiladas, and the spinach was clearly not fresh, on top of there being an overwhelming amount of it. I'm talking chunks. We paid about 20 dollars for this food, and it was completely not worth it. I was deceived, and I would hate for anyone else to have the false conception that this place is halfway decent. The only good thing about it was the authentic music.
My husband and I ate there for the first time today. The food was awesome! Best Meican food we've ever had! The service was great. We live approximately 40-45 miles away, but will defintely will be going back soon!!
I went here today for the first time! OMG the food rocks, as well as the atmosphere! Be sure to try the chocolate cake topped with flan, chopped pecans and drizzled with caramel! mmmmmmm Also very reasonably priced!
Best Damn mexican food in Kansas City. I may be bias seeing as i grew up down the street from them owners family. But I can tell you this it is the most authentic mexican food I have found in the area and has some of the best wait staff and cooks around. You will not find a better tamale anywhere else. I eat there every chance I can and would and have recommend it to anyone who wants good authentic Mexican cuisine.
The best Mexican food you will have in KC. We go there about once a week, sometimes twice a week. I've tried most of the items on the menu and have not had one dissapointing meal. Everything is excellent so it's hard to name one or two favorites. Try the Ceviche, Tacos Fritos, Enchiladas Verdes or Flautas Nortenas. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The bartenders and servers are great. They are genuinely nice and very helpful.
Dislikes- Parking. That one or two chips in the basket that have a funny wang.
Likes-EVERYTHING ELSE. I had the fish tacos- they were wonderfully tasty even if I think they should give out a little more of the chipotle sauce with it. The pork tacos tasted great too- they were a little spicy for the better half.
But OH the salsa was good.
but it's some of the best Mexican food in KC. I love the Flautas Nortenas, with flour tortillas and perfectly spiced chicken. The fish dishes are great, the salsa is tasty and I can't wait to try the flan and sopaipillas. We are slowly working our way through the menu! I hope that this is a successful venture. Just down the road from You Say Tomato, this is a great addition to the Dutch Hill neighborhood. The prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly, and the food is excellent. What's not to love?
