Mrs Wilkes Dining Room

Description

The sign hangs beneath mossy oaks, so you'll have to look for the line that forms during the breakfast and lunchtime hours at this restaurant. This no-nonsense eating-house has been a Savannah favorite for over six decades, serving up down home Southern treats in the basement of a brick building that dates to 1870. The seasonal menu features a rotating plethora of traditional delights, including Southern fried chicken, okra gumbo, buttery cornbread and collard greens. You won't find a bigger lunch plate in town. Family style dining, and cash only.

All you have to do is look for the line forming outside the old house on W Jones st and you know you've found Mrs. Wilkes! Classic southern fare with fried and baked specialities and the price is well worth what you get. Recommended if you are in Savannah!

Amazing fried chicken -- best ever! Bring a wheelbarrow, you'll be so stuffed, and plan to spend the rest of your trip walking it off.

We were advised about the traditional long lines but arrived at Mrs. Wilkes on a Thursday the first week in September and waited only 5 minutes. Ten of us were ushered to a big round table that had bowls of great Southern cooking ready to be passed. Nothing like breaking the ice among strangers with everyone drooling over rice & gravy, candied yams, okra & tomatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans, collards, barbeque, and plates of cornbread and the best fried chicken I have had in some time. And the sweet tea is mighty refreashing. Staff came by frequently to ask how we were enjoying the lunch and whether they could bring us anything more. The meal ended with a choice of blackberry cobbler or banana pudding for dessert. While some might complain about taking your dishes up to the cleaning station, it's obvious the staff is more focused on bringing food out The place is abuzz with activity, but take time to look at the posters and newspaper clippings on the wall to see who else has enjoyed Mrs. Wilkes spectacular lunches.

Love, love, love this place!!! We always make time to eat lunch at Mrs. Wilkes. Long line is worth every bit of it. You won't be disappointed. Food is always good and the best sweet tea!

The fried chicken is addictive. Most everything else is basic Southern cooking, filling and fattening.

When I called to ask if they could accommodate handicapped persons, the terse reply was that there are benches inside and out, so the person could maybe sit on a bench while the rest of the party stood in line. Against my better judgement, that's what we did - stand in line for 2 hours and 35 minutes. Then, when our table was served vegetables + beef stew and BBQ, we were told the fried chicken would be out soon. After almost everyone had finished a plate of vegetables, the hostess asked if everything was OK. Only then, after we asked, did we get any fried chicken. The food was good, but the servers tried, repeatedly, to remove the bowls of food while several folks were still eating. We felt very rushed, as if they wanted to clear our table within 30 minutes, after our 2 1/2 hour wait. Add to that the fact that customers are asked to bus their own table and take dishes to the kitchen. The food was good; the hospitality lacking; and the experience was memorable only for the long wait and the rushed demeanor of the staff. We won't go back (and we shared our experience with others on our trolley ride the next morning!

Soul Food in Georgia
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/26/10
This is such a great place for soul food. They are only open from 11-2, but the portions are family-sized. My families favorites fried chicken, black-eyed peas, and sweet tea.

This place is so good, you'll find that mostly the only sound you hear inside is the clanking of dishes. Everyone is too busy eating to talk. You think you might have eaten some good food at some point in your life, but this is almost unreal. Listen to what the reviewers say and make a stop here. Not only will you not regret it, you'll never forget it.
