I was delighted to see Brandy Ho's as a top place to eat in San Francisco. I personally have been eating there since 1981 and love every bite of food I have ever had there. It is a wonderful place to visit with many of the same employee's since 1981. Keep up the good work and wonderful food.
23 Years ago, my folks best friends moved to SF from the greater Los Angeles area...We would frequently visit, and ultimately we moved the family to Northern CA..Life story aside, they took us to Brandy Ho's for dinner on one of our earliest visits to SF, and thus...a 23 yr adventure in GREAT hot n spicy food began...EVERY time we visited, we'd have to get some Ho's...When we moved to SF, we'd dine their 3-4 times monthly...When we moved to Novato, we'd drive for it once a month, then on to Petaluma..Guess what?? Still needed to get our Brandy Ho's on...Now, I recommend ANYONE and EVERYONE to this place...The food is simply put, the best Chinese food I've ever had (and I love it), the fiery spiciness is perfect (but seriously, if you don't like spicy hot...order MILD, trust me here)From their takes on conventional items (pot stickers, sweet n sour anything) they have made them into a style all their own..THE BEST sweet n sour pork EVER, although that's the last thing I'd personally get...Soups, BOMB...Deep Fried Dumplings..Sooo good for you...Gong Pao chicken (my fave) off the charts...Their usage of fresh ingredients, and very creatively gourmet sauces..Well...EAT this food, and realize that this is how Chinese should be!! Hunan smoked ham...Authentically delicious Hunan delicacy!!! Super good stuff!!!
Completely and totally impressed with this restaurant. Fried calamari appetizer was a large portion, served with a sweet and sour dip. Also had sweet and sour shrimp. Portions were large, prices very inexpensive and service was terrific.
We went to Brandy Ho's on the advice of a local who said it was better than House of Nanking...of which we were asking him for directions. We did go to the House of Nanking that day and it was great. See my other review. However, this time, we decided to follow his advice and make our way through Chinatown to Brandy Ho's(on the far end of Chinatown, on Columbus street). On our way, we bumped into some other tourists who were looking for a place to eat. They almost ended up at Chinatown restaurant but luckily we saved them from that horrible fate.(see other review) Okay, okay, the Brandy Ho review.....We were pleasantly surprised to see that Brandy Ho's was clean and charming. The cooking was done on the side, like an old fashioned diner, except it was Chinese cooks and flaming woks. The server was courteous and friendly. We ordered steamed dumplings, Brandy Ho's fried rice and beef with green onions. When you order, you let the server know how hot you want it. He lets you know that medium is actually hot. The dumplings were tasty but the wrapper was too doughy. I think the wrapper is homemade, so it was a little thick. However, our main dishes were excellent. The serving sizes were perfect for two large helpings...three people who were actually eating what they should be, could dine on it. The food was tasty and the heat ratio was just enough to give you a kick but not make you reach for your water glass. The only drawback was that a coke cost $3.75...what's up with that!!! Otherwise, we thought the meal was good and for 2 people, $25 isn't too bad...even with that darn coke!
We go there very often, as the food is excellent, and the price very reasonable. I really recommend the steamed fish and the hot and sour beef. The steamed spring rolls are great as a starter, as well as the egg rolls. With a nice bottle of chardonnay, this whole meal will cost you max $60 for 2 people.
