A nouveau venture by the Rosebud Restaurants group, Rosebud Trattoria brings rustic and artisan Italian cuisine to the River North district of Chicago. Standing out amongst its counterparts in the restaurant strip, this Romanesque Trattoria gives its patrons an authentic dining experience, with elegant ambiance that perfectly goes with the gourmet food, along with a handpicked selection of wines. Meat and seafood dominate the menu, which features classic standbys like Mama's Meatballs, Bruschetta alla Romana, Cheese Ravioli, Veal Piccata and Salmon Portofino. The impressive line-up of wines is made up of varieties like Cabaret Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, both imported and local. The restaurant's Wine Room is an ideal venue for hosting intimate occasions and small parties. It is advisable to reserve a table ahead to avoid disappointments.
We have been going to Trattoria aka Ballo for years. We are very happy that our favorite server Danny Levin is back and our favorite manager Yvonne is back too. For lunch I really enjoy the Steak Salad, which is Grilled Sirloin, beefsteak tomatoes, red onion, and crumbled Gorgonzola cheese drizzled with Peppercorn Dressing that is stacked on a bed of mixed greens. For dinner I always enjoy the Grandma's Gravy, which is braised beef, San Marzano tomatoes, Ruota pasta, and whipped ricotta cheese. Both are excellent choices, but you can't beat the brick oven pizza's or the cocktail specials. Overall, service by Danny and Yvonne is awesome and the food is always good.
My cousin and I ate at Rosebud in June 2009. All I can say is it was the best meal I ever had in my life! I had the Chicken Marsala and I still dream about it! If you're Italian or love Italian food, you MUST go there.
Ballo reminds me of the authentic Italian restuarants we are familiar with in the 80's movies about the Chicago Mob era where the whole Italian family would gather for a meal... and then proceed to get in a shoot out. But don't worry, this restaurant is safe! This place has great food in good portions with a decent wine selection. Prices are typical for Chicago but well worth it. Take a date, group of friends, co-workers, or even the family and enjoy the atmosphere with great service from knowledgable waiters. You might think I'm getting paid to write this, but I'm not. I'm just an outsider from Wisconsin who had a great time in Chicago at Ballo!
