The quality is inconsistent. Sometimes it's too spicy; sometimes it is bland. The idli I ordered was atrocious. The wait is too long, and the food is not value for the money.
For a more authentic experience, try Udupi Palace, which is just a few doors down.
I am usually skeptical of indian restaurants in the SF city. But, this one really surprised me. The food is very nice. We tried the cheese dosa, which is never done in India. It turned out very good. The eggplant vegetarian dish was yummy. The dessert was not bad. I suspect it was frozen rasamalai. The place was super crowded and noisy on a saturday evening . The dinner cost us about $50 for two without drinks.
This place is expensive. OK, the food is good but not THAT good! This place does have good ambience but that plus the quality and quantity of food just doesnt deserve the price these guys are asking. Dosas start at $10 a piece... and the cuisine isnt traditional. The amount of time waiting to get a table on a Thursday night combined with the price makes me think it would be more worthwhile going to Berkeley to Udupi Palace where they serve south Indian cuisine that is more traditional and cheaper. What Udupi lacks in ambience it makes up in Indian clientele who definately know what the food should taste like!
