I live in New Orleans for 16 years before moving to California. Food in Angelines is Cajun like, but not the real deal. Their food is too salty and does not have much of a cajun kick. There also not enough waiter or waitress to provide good service.
Wow, what a three hour ordeal and major disappointment. The wait staff consisted of one waiter - who was nice but overwhelmed. The plates were hit or miss, some good, others not. Some of us were served our main meals ten minutes before the rest of us got our food. We were there for nearly three hours and were offered drinks just one time. We were not the only unhappy table. Inconsistent, mediocre food does not overcome the operational and organizational pitfalls of this restaurant.
Been ther 3 times for lunch, once for dinner. Lively, fun music, amiable host, spotty unprofessional service, but pleasant. Gumbo - well, Smokey Robinson's frozen is better for the price. Not very good, my family is Cajun and many are still in Louisiana. The worst thing was the undercooked chicken. Not very apologetic or afraid on their part. Scary! I also must say - I tried the fried chicken and it was bad (outside flavor good, pink-red inside) - and the chicken sandwich was bland. Gumbo, not good, the beans and rice I tasted was ok. Really I don't know why it is getting good reviews at all, except for niceness, they are totally overwhemed, unprofessional in the kitchen and wait staff. Must be a lot of students reviewing. Dessert was pretty good - the atmosphere? None to speak of as far as decor. Music is really great and the people are friendly. But as a restaurant? Well, hush puppies were ok. I would say, if you happen by for lunch, enjoy the music, but don't expect much, and unless service has improved, just sit back and enjoy the music!
I ate there Saturday night. i was charged twice for the meal and an employee there stole my credit debit card number and used it to make purchases. I would either pay in cash or follow the server when they use your card.
Ordered the red beans & rice, which wasn't very flavorful - so nothing special. Also ordered the catfish which comes with hush puppies and potato salad. Not bad, but again the catfish and the hush puppies were both somewhat bland. My overall grade is a C+.
A friend and Iwent there on a monday and the food I ordered was delicious. I had a small bowl of gumbo, that wasn't as good as the one I have at home but pretty tasty. With that I also had their buttermilk fried chicken, with mashed sweet potatoes and zuchini... the chicken was perfection, crispy skin, juicy, flavorful meat. My friend ordered the shrimp creole...which in her opinion was good (she's a picky eater so if it's good...it's good). For dessert we had the beignets...they were awesome. One con...the sweet tea I ordered was lacking ...I've had far better. The sweet potatoes were ok but I've also had better...but that chicken was AWESOME!
The atmosphere is awesome-- very lively, light and airey. The staff seemed a tad overwhelmed at times, but very curteous and patient. The food was impeccable, authentic and tasty. I recommend making a reservation, or going for lunch (before 5 pm) when the wait is not as long. My favorites are the voo-doo shrimp and fried chicken. Be ready to let your palet explore!
