I recently moved to Plymouth and visited Peter McRae's Karate School and was very pleased to finally find a dojo that teaches the basics of this traditional art form in the same way as the Okinawan masters. I have traveled and trained in Okinawa and thought I would never find a local school that teaches Uechi-Ryu as it is meant to be taught. All of the black belts are highly trained and receive their certificates directly from Okinawa. This is a serious dojo for the serious student who wants to learn authentic karate without the fluff!
For well over 20 years Peter has been teaching karate to children, teens and adults the way that karate is taught in Okinawa. His numerous travels to Okinawa ensure his techniques are true to this historic style. It is a joy to behold when the Okinawans travel all the way to Plymouth to his dojo to demonstrate and teach his students the way he does!
I used to take karate at Peter McRaes but it was just okay. But not as awesome as Thurston Academy of Martial Arts. At Peter Mcraes all he did was boring old strength and conditioning drills but whose kids want to learn strength and conditioning all class long. Plus at the end of class all he did was kata. I have to admit I quit because Igot so bored all the time. At thurston Academy I never get bored Sensei joe always does amazing drills each and every class. For the kids he usually does kicking and punchind drills that the kids will never get bored of. And plus every month he has a movie night for all the kids who want to come. Great place would never go back to peter McRaes and will always stay at thurston academy of martial arts.
My three children have been attending Peter McRae's karate dojo for five years. When seeking to choose a karate instructor from the many practicing locally, word of mouth consistently led me to Peter McRae's. I was not misled.
Peter's dojo is run with discipline, kindness and respect - virtues which he models and insists upon in his students. He takes a genuine interest in them - encouraging, correcting, and educating them in not only the discipline but the history of karate. There are broader life lessons found in the practice of karate, something Peter is consistent in drawing the parallels to. His rates are reasonable and a bargain. He offers a discounted rate for multiple family students - greatly appreciated. Highly recommended.
I am the mother of two children who have been training at Peter McRae's Karate School for several years. He is wonderful with both children and adults alike. Mr. McRae devotes himself to teaching karate full time and the effort shows. I have observed the class on many occasions, and there is nowhere else I would rather send my children. They have learned to defend themselves and developed respect for others and self while building a quiet confidence during their many years of study with Mr. McRae.
The quality of instruction is not only excellent, but the price is affordable Mr. McRae does not charge registration fees, belt fees or test fees. What's more, you don't need to sign a contract! I simply pay my bill on a monthly basis and am happy to do so.
This mom highly recommends Peter McRae's Karate School!

I highly recommend Peter McRae karate. My daughters both attend the dojo and have learned a great deal about avoiding fights, respecting others, listening and focusing, and of course becoming more physically fit. I know many parents who have also sent there children to this dojo and have never heard a complaint- all rave about it's excellence. Mr. McRae runs a wonderful program. All the teachers are top notch. The price structure offers an excellent value without long term commitments.
Peter's school teaches karate as it is meant to be tought. His lessons aid one not only in combat but in life itself. Most importantly, his instruction aids people in avoiding fights, and when no other route is possible, defending ones self in almost any situation
I love Peter McRae's karate school. I myself have learned so much. A lot of people may think that karate is about beating other people and learning how to fight other people, when it's the total oppposite. Karate is about respecting others and self-control. I definatley recommend this karate school.
I highly recommend Peter McRae's Karate School. I studied at this school from the age of 8 to the age of 20. Wonderful teachers and a great atmosphere. I loved attending classes. Everyone is respectful and courteous. It is a great environment for children and adults.
I used to be at the Thurston Academy. This dojo is professional, the instructors know what they are doing and are not flirting with one another, the instructors treat children with dignity and are not gossiping behind the patron's backs. Two thumbs up for content as well. Thank you!
