Normandy Shores Golf Course
Normandy Shores Golf Course is an older, 18-hole public golf course designed by William S. Flynn and Howard Toomey and opened in 1938. The course is 6,402 yards, par 71 with a slope of 120 from the back tees and 5,527 yards, par 73 with a slope of 119 from the front tees. Although caddies are not available, walking the course is permitted at certain times, and golf carts are included in the greens fees. The facility rents clubs and does permit spiked shoes. The course offers reduced fees on weekdays, during the low season (May-October), for juniors and for twilight plays.
I learned to play golf at this course back in 1962 from a guy who was considered the best teaching pro in the nation. My great uncle was a well known person at the course and I received lessons from a guy who was labeled as the best teaching pro in the country at that time. My great uncle lived at the 150 yard marker on the first hole until his death in 1982. He was a well known figure on the course. I went back to the course in Dec 2004 and saw that the course was in great shape. Sad to say that I didn't have the time to play it... but I always thought it was one of the better semi public courses in the area.
I have always recommended this course to others.
Overall this was a nice course. If you are a resident of Florida it was a good price. At $120.00 per round and a $50.00 club rental for out of state residents. This course, carts and equipment are not worth your time and money.
Normandy Shores recently reopened after a complete renovation. This course is in excellent shape. The grass is a third generation of paspalum. The greens run fast and true, with plenty of undulation. They have added a number of bunkers and increased the difficulty. It certainly compares favorably with the Miami Beach Golf Club and is certainly superior to any other municipal course in So. Fla.
Thre is a driving range and great practice putting and chipping area.
Although the new clubhouse is not yet built, the temporary clubhouse provides a full service proshop and bar. On weekends there is a grill going on the big deck. Service was great.
I really like the complete renovation of the course. This is now a true golf course. The greens and fairways are perfect. The greens in particular are great, fast and true.
If you have not tried this course since it reopened you owe it to yourself to give it try.
The service is great and all the guys in the pro shop are very helpful and courteous.
