Parque Nacional Isla Contoy
Parque Nacional Isla Contoy, one of the beauties of nature, has been preserved as a huge ecological reserve. It is surrounded by mangroves, where the flora and fauna are zealously protected by the Mexican authorities. An expedition to this island is a must for nature lovers or adventurous spirits. Enjoy the waters in a small boat, watching wildlife in its natural habitat. You will be surrounded by monkeys, birds, small mammals and fish. Call the tourist information desk or ask for more information sending an email.
Great trip if you can handle boats on the open water. We had a great company take us called Snorkle Cancun. The trip takes about 2 hrs each way.
On the way down we stoped at Isla Mujeres to snorkle for about 45 mins. Then we went onto Isla Contoy. The island is as long as Isla Mujeres, but you only get to walk around a 1/5 of it. Still, its worth the buy. Its off the beaten path and a great way to spend the day. It cost us about 75.00 USD pp.
Although I was hesitant to get on a boat (prone to seasickness), I truly enjoyed the trip to Isla Contoy. The pristine island was by far, my favorite thing about Cancun. The biologist/guide was outstanding and as we learned about the wildlife, we also enjoyed bbq and tequila! It was truly a perfect day, fun and educational...but in a really cool way.
The boat trip over from Isla Mujeres to Isla Contoy was great. Fellow travelers were from Veracruz, Mexico. We stopped for an hour or so of snorkeling in an area where a guide is required and one may touch NOTHING. The plant life was like nothing I'd ever seen before as I'd only been snorkling on less protected reefs. We enjoyed the views, the nesting frigate birds, the short hike around the island. The lunch was incredible and the opportunity to meet and feed a manta ray was certainly something to talk about with friends at home. If you're on Isla Mujeres and want easy access to something very special in the way of "ecotourismo", sign up for that boat to Isla Contoy! Well worth it. BG Santa Cruz, CA
The opportunity to see part of mexico in an unspoiled, undeveloped state was truly priceless. after visiting several other tourist attractions over two separate visits to the cancun area (xcaret, xel-ha, bullfights, isla mujeres, tulum, chichen-itza, chankanaab and punta sur on cozumel) we would definitely rate the hospitality and knowledge of the staff as THE VERY BEST of all of our other experiences. we'll be back!!!!!!!!! Thank you el doktor jaime and also the boat crew who grilled our delicious lunch
