Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Wilma, the following description may no longer be accurate. Please consider this when making your travel plans. This typical Mexican restaurant is situated in one of the newest and most exclusive Shopping Centers on the island. Tables are arranged to give you excellent views of the sea and one of the nicest beaches in Cancún. The fresh seafood dishes are your best options. Do not forget to go easy on the hot spices. Remember—they are a basic ingredient in the dishes. The decor is Mexican, with some cacti and straw hats. There is live music and parking available.

A family favorite!
By Matt, 11/25/09
Our famiy has been visiting Cancun for 13 years and this is our favorite restaurant. The staff welcomes us as treasured friends each year. The servers are helpful and friendly while not being obtrusive. Our children love the tableside magician and mairachi band and we love that they happy and eating and entertained as we enjoy our dinner.

Bad waiter
By Ninh, 02/25/09
The waiter was trying to sell us the house fajitas (for 2) but completely changed his attitude after he found out that my wife was a vegetarian and could only order two vegetarian appetizers on the menu (there was nothing in the entrees). During the entire evening, he never came back to check on us. When he presented us the check, he did not even say thanks. My wife also had a stomachache and ..... that night. The Mariachi band saved the night though when they sang Besame Mucho to us

bad choice
By HeidiC, 04/01/08
it was our last night in cancun and we wanted some good authentic mexican food. their house fajitas were terrible, the appetizers so-so and very small, and carne asada was tough and flavorless. wish we skipped it.

Not True Mexican Food
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/13/05
I have been involved in Mexican cooking for more than 50 years and this menue appeals to the North American taste. It what you see on Cooking Channels at home. Your best bet is to experience the restaurants in downtown Cancun. Most Mexicans can,t afford what this place puts on the menue. We have been to Cancun more than a dozen times,we enjoy the people and find the Hotel Zone nothing more than tourist trap!

yummy

It was great. The waiters gave us directions and told us stories about the bullfights we were going to. We felt very welcome.

Lively and Romantic!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/26/05
Upon entering the restaurant, the staff was extremely courteous. The dinning experience was such that if I ever visit Cancun again, I will definately put El Mortero I my must do list. I especially loved the freshly baked bread that is brought straight from the oven to your table. The fish in chipotle sauce was Wow! Taste like the fish was born in the sauce. The entertainment was a marvelous. Having mariachi music at your table side while drinking hefty a margarita with my lovely wife was paradise.
