Mullet was over cooked....cheese grits were runny...cole slaw was runny...wait staff acted like they were high and mighty....will never go back...Talked to Mr. Pasco and he didn t seem to care. This place will close soon enough...
We just had a meal at this restaurant. Upon entering, the filth of the carpeting was very distracting at the least. I almost left, but my son was in town and wanted seafood, so we stayed. I ordered the grilled mahi-mahi. It looked like it had just come out of the microwave after being frozen for some time. The flavor was bland and the texture was rubbery. I ate part of it, and left the rest. The baked beans and cole slaw were excellent tasting. The waitress did not know the prices of the fish and had to go ask twice. The waitress offer me a slice of pie to substitute for the poor quality fish, I refused. I will never go here again.
I don't understand all the negative reviews. I have never had a bad experience at Nichols. I've only been to the new one, but I can't imagine the old location being any better. The service is always fast and excellent. As for the pricing, you can't beat the Seafood Platter for two (option of fried or broiled). Where else can you get a huuuge plate of good seafood, 2 sides EACH, 2 salads, 2 of the best tasting crab bisque I have ever had the pleasure of eating at a great low price. And if you aren't as hungry, a lot of the seafood plates are offered as half orders and are less expensive, but still will fill you up. My husband and I love Nichols (along with his entire family and my family when they visit) and would recommend it to anyone who wants to have great seafood.
Growing up in the south in a fried food eating family, and even though I love it and unfortunately have been forced to limit my intake of it for health and beauty reasons-I STILL LOVE FRIED FOOD! Fish in particular.
Nichols in it's day must have been quite a place to eat good food prepared with love in it. My parents were visiting and we went with as high an expectation as you can have for fried fish. Let's be honest-how hard is it to fry fish and hush puppies? It's easy as pie, that's one of the reasons we like it so much, right? How they could have gotten it so wrong is beyond me. My parents don't ever complain about food like their food critic son could hardly eat it. I would have complained to the staff, but from the looks of it, everyone in there got the same thing and had the same look on their face as well.
Other than the visit to a Shakey's Pizza in Thailand, this was definately close to my least favorite meal to date. And it was EXPENSIVE.
At least you would expect bad pizza in Thailand, what happened here??
People in the area were going on and on how we had to go to Nichol's. My husband and I visited the old restraunt on the water. The restraunt was not that busy when we went in..just a few tables with people. Service was really, really slow and the hush puppies were not hot when they were brought out. My husband and I waited forever it seemed like for the soup. After that we got fed up and left. We've never been back.
I love nichol's seafood, I hate that hurricane ivan destroyed the restaurant on the water, but it is still good on avalon blvd. my brother and his friends worked at Nichols years ago, I have been enjoying fine dining from them for years.
