The dictionary defines a rapscallion as "a ne'er-do-well", mostly applied to pirates and scoundrels and the like. Here at Rapscallions the restaurant, we define it as "a great place for a really short vacation". Rapscallions was started by James and Shael Morgan who are dedicated Parrotheads (Jimmy Buffett fans to those who are not familiar with the term).
My family and I decided to check out this restaurant because we had seen it on Man VS Food as a part of their food challenge and figured it had to be good if it made it on tv. Boy were we wrong. The food was horrible! First off, we decided to start our meal with the nachos as an appetizer. It was definitely not appetizing. The pork was dry and the nachos or whatever they used as nachos were stale. Then came the meals. I had decided on the crabcake sandwich expecting to find a deliciously well seasoned and crispy crabcake in between two buns. Boy was I way off. The crabcake was mushy and bland. Furthermore, the fries that came with it were stale. As far as my wifes dinner goes, she ordered the fish tacos which she told me were average at best. Finally, my son ordered the seafood platter. For $18 we were expecting to see a steaming heap of seafood on his plate. Instead, he got a piece of fish which looked like it came off of a frozen food microwave dinner, three shrimp, mashed potatoes, and these tiny scallops that looked more like garbanzo beans instead of the giant sea scallops most other restaurants serve. What a rip off! Man were we disappointed! To top it all off, my wife left with an upset stomach and a feeling of disgust! What were Man Vs Food and Adam Richmond thinking?! I think the real food challenge was to see if you could keep your food down after the meal. It was disgusting.
My wife & I went there for our birthdays and the food was good. Kind of upscale and pricey for what you got. Wife got ribs, very meaty, tender, no fat, no gristle, sauce meager but tasty. I ordered the Grouper. Probably one of the best Grouper I've had. No salad, no rolls. one side of vegetables. Mine $11.95, hers $15.95. Plenty of room between tables, not all crowded in. Walls bleak, no pictures, not much atmosphere, waiters had on cutoffs, kind of sloppily dressed, quiet, not much to write home about except food was good.
Rapscallions is one of our main places to go when we don't feel like cooking or driving too far. I prefer to sit in the bar section, less cheesey atmosphere.. with those plastic tablecloths. Plus, we've found that service in the dining area isn't as good as in the bar area. Everything we've tried has been pretty good. The mojo pork is really tasty. The cuban is, too. They put the mojo pork on that. We've had the mussels, the jerk wings, seafood pasta, many other items. The only thing we ever ordered that we didn't care for was the chicken sandwich. It was just boring. Other than that, Rapscallions is definitely one of our go to places, every other week or so.
Just went there today and noticed a new menu. Many of the seafood favorites are still there, but there seemed to be a little more variety. While it is true (as one reviewer pointed out) that most of the help is young, we had a server who was excellent in seeing to our needs. I had fish tacos...maybe not the best meal to judge a restaurant, but I have had them at places like Cheesecake Factory and Green Iguana. These were excellent! Fish cooked just right and plenty of fish per taco. Tasty black beans were the side and were also very good. Nice enviroment which is even better when the weather cools off and the deck is more comfortable.
Rapscallions is the best!! The food is alsome and the atmosphere is pure Caribbean Soul with a bit of Florida mixed in.We have been dining there for a couple years now and it just gets better.
Love that Conch Critter Band!!! Miss them!!
I was with a party of 3 on a Sunday afternoon, the plalce was not crowded. We were treated like we where regulars. The waitress was awesome, so was the bartender. The food OMG it was great, I had the Shrimp and a stick, excellent, the chicken pizza, mmmm and the quesadilla was good also. I am thinking that this may be a every Sunday afternoon meal place.
