Cafe Gibraltar is a truly unique restaurant, owned and operated by Chef Jose Luis Ugalde and his wife Liam Durkee, it is a warm and welcoming space where every patron's experience is extremely important. The menu is creative and expertly prepared by Jose Luis. He utilizes organic ingredients, primarily locally grown and raised, and creates dishes that honor their cultural orgins and yet showcase his unique vision and artistry. The name Gibraltar is inspired by the Straights of Gibraltar, which are the gateway to the Mediterranean. Jose Luis creates cuisine that represents cultures along the entire rim of the Mediterranean. The seasonal menu may feature dishes from France, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Macedonia, Greece and any of the countries of North Africa. Check out our website for current menus featuring the bounty of our local farms and ranches, and the fresh bounty of the sea. Cafe Gibraltar only utilizes fresh seafood, and we often get our fish straight off of the boats in the harbor.
We were so disappointed in this restaurant. How it got the good reviews it has is a complete mystery. It is a small diner like place that sits on a gravel lot with a busy street whizzing by. We went there to celebrate our daughter's birthday and made a special trip from OC - what a letdown. The food was just okay, but we were expecting something special - especially since it made Zagat's list of the 25 best. Who got paid off?
As a long time HMB resident I'm so grateful for Jose', the owner/operator of Cafe Gibraltar. HMB's location means restaurants can provide tourists with dirt quality food at high prices (Gin Wan, Sams, Barbara's, Miramar, Distillery, etc., etc.) Of the four coastside restaurants I could recommend to non-tourists, Cafe G. tops the list for Jose's unique and robust recipes. Second to Cafe' G. I'd recommend Jose's brother's place, Chez Shea, where Alberto serve's Jose's recipes. Third, I'd recommend the Ritz Carlton where you can get similar quality, but less original faire, at twice the price. Cafe G. is that good.
This is my favorite restaurant in the bay area. The food, service and atmosphere are consistently excellent. We've been eating here for seven years and have never had a dish that we didn't love. It's a little off the beaten track but definitely worth seaking out.
My family and I had the privilege of dining at this Mediterranean restaurant just north of Half Moon Bay.
At the end of a family meal, I had forgotten to take my son's leftover pizza which had been boxed by the waitstaff. When I returned less than five minutes later to retrieve the leftover pizza, the waitstaff explained that they had already discarded it. As I was standing in front of the open kitchen, the owner chef Jose Luis Ugalde immediately said that he would cook up a new pizza in five minutes, despite my protests. One of his assistants had already assembled the pizza ingredients by the time I assented.
So, aside from the lovely food we enjoyed that evening (ground lamb meatballs, grilled octopus and calamari for appetizers, entrees of lamb, root
soup, braised guinea hen, and grouper), we were also treated to the generosity and grace of Chef Jose.
Everyone should visit this Zagat-rated yet unassuming, romantic, kid-friendly, and generous restaurant.
