I have heard a lot of people rave about Freebirds... particularly the locations in Austin... and I just don't understand it. I have tried several locations and the food is okay, but they are barely average compared to other burrito joints I've been to around the country... and clearly not as good as Chipotle, their main competition here in Houston. I have several friends who have loved Freebirds, but since trying Chipotle have lowered their opinion.
A quick comparison:
Both restaurants are Southwest Style burrito joints (not really mexican food, but kind of). The atmosphere at both places is not bad but nothing special; kitschy southwest fast food chic... who cares, I go for the food.
Compared to Chipotle, the portions may be a bit bigger at Freebirds, but they are also a bit more expensive... anyway a Chipotle burrito is definitely plenty for most people... and if you want more, then add some chips and quacamole or a taco and you will still come out ahead.
More important is the quality of the food. I will say Freebirds' burrito tortillas are better than average... but the quality of the rest of the ingredients is severely lacking. In particular, Freebirds' meats are definitely not on the same level as Chipotle's.
I really hate to slam Freebird's, but after all the raves I was extremely disappointed. I do still eat there occasionally out of convenience... but the extra drive to the Chipotle at Fairmont and Beltway 8 is worth it... NEWS FLASH!! a new Chipotle is opening soon on Bay Area Blvd so Wooo-Hooo!!
Well over all this is a great place to eat. You can pick which tortilla you want and which veggies, cheese, meat ect. that you want on it. I haven't tried to much there but the stuff that I had was really good even their chips and queso was great. The only thing that I would complain about is that they should put a tad bit more meat on the burrito's and that is pretty much it. They play great music and it is always clean in there. Even when it is busy and it is all about presentation of a place. I have never had anyone be rude to me or give me a funny look. I even had a situation where they ran out of queso and all they needed to do was just make more. They didn't know it until after I paid for it. So what they ended up doing was refunding me the money and givning me the chips and queso for free. I thought that was nice of them to do that. They really take good care of you at this particular location........If you wanna get full and not spend a lot of money come here!
This place is great!!!! The choices that are available make the decisions hard but after you taste the food you are hooked. THe give you soooooooo much food for your money. I will definately go back when I am having a need for the feed ... Customer Service and curteousy is abundant. Employees were very helpful and not bad looking which helps when they are speaking to you and serrving your food.
It's like Subway for a burrito...you pick your size and type of tortilla, your meat, your veggies, all as they make it in front of you! Sometimes it can get really loud and busy at lunch and at dinner, but overall, the wait is worth it!!
