Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary provides wagon rides as well as \"Buck Buggies\" golf cart rentals to tour the sanctuary. You will see piebald deer, white deer, big horn sheep, elk, bison, and whitetail deer on the trip.
This is the best ride I have ever been on. All the animals are right there in your face and last year I had a buffalo hitting my boots with his head. My friends and I make it a point to go at least one time evey year if not more.
The Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the BEST places to take a field trip for any age group of kids. Lana and Dave really tailor the trip to the needs of your class and topic you are studying. I live in West Bend, but teach in Sheboygan, and I have still been taking my kindergarten class on a field trip to Shalom every spring! It is very well worth the price of admission as well as the drive! The kids love it and teachers/chaperones do too! I would also recommend it for family outings, or any occassion--absolutely AWESOME--a real treasure in Washington County!
I can't quite put it into words it was more of a feeling. I had tears in my eyes several times. I wish that more people could have an experience like I did. And then make that experience make a difference. We all need to improve they way we treat the people and animals that we interact with everyday.
We have been there both in the evening and daytime. The most awesome trip was at night. You get to see the animals approach from the darkness of the trees, sometimes seeing them come from a distance as there eyes "glow" upon there approach. Once you reach the halfway point, the ride back is in total silence except for the beautiful calming music they play. It gives you a time to reflect or just let your mind relax, sit back and enjoy. Definitely dress warm as the breeze at night is cool. It is a MUST SEE opportunity. Don't miss it!
The Sanctuary is an absolutely beautiful place to visit! We found out that they had a Bed and Breakfast and spent a weekend there! Talk about relaxing! It was the most enjoyable weekend we've had in a very long time. The Raccoon Den is beautiful and we had the "Buck Buggy" after the park closed and early in the morning when the animals are more active. We saw elk, pied deer, albino deer, buffalo, goats, long horn sheep, foxes, and many more animals! We are looking forward to going back to spend another weekend! Well worth the visit! We don't live close enough to visit too often but we are planning on spending another long weekend next year for my birthday! Our hosts were very gracious and helpful and we enjoyed talking to them and getting to know them. Find time to visit the Sanctuary but be sure to go early or later in the afternoon when the animals are more active or you might not see too much!
We had such a great time and we learned so much in the two hours. The bufflos were such beautiful creatures! I think the young and old can enjoy this experience. The childern on our ride had lots of questions and were very interested in what was going on. I have told everyone I know about it and what a neat thing to see. I would love to go back, but this time it will be while it is still light out. We went on the 6:00 ride and it was almost to dark to see the animals until they were almost right by the wagon. It was still great.
A great way to spend a wonderful fall day or any day outside. Take a "buggy ride" down the trails and see lots of deer, elk, buffalo, and more at the Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary near West Bend, WI. The owner has lots of interesting stories to tell about the animals and more. This was a terrific outing, can't wait to go back with the grandkids.
First, we'd like to say that Dave and Lana not only welcomed us like family for last years winter sleigh ride as well as the 'rut ride' but for helping us plan and organize our wedding, which was May 12, 2007, held at the sanctuary. They were a TREMENDOUS help with everything including the much needed laughs before the big day! The weather turned out to be so beautiful and everything turned out perfectly, which I'm not sure it would have gone so smoothly without their much appreciated love, support and effort--thank you both...and Ashley too for Moose! I LOVE it there because each time is a new adventure...seeing and learning about the different animals, how it relates to the native american culture, and the symbolism involved in it all--it's SO great!! I can't wait to go back for the wagon rides!
