West Virginia State Capitol Building
Situated along the Kanawha River, the classical-styled State Capitol was designed by architect Cass Gilbert, who also designed the U.S. Treasury Building and the U.S. Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C. With an exterior of buff Indiana limestone, the State Capitol's 293-foot gold dome that tops the structure is five feet higher than the dome of the U.S. Capitol. The entire dome is gilded in 14 karat gold leaf applied to the copper and lead roof. It is presently the tallest building in West Virginia.

The most beautiful capitol in the nation

I used to live in Chas. and worked in the Capitol building. I was so proud to walk into that building every day to do my job for my Governor and the West Virginia people. I have taken my children there several times and they were fascinated by it's beauty and realm. I miss those halls! I used to eat my lunch outside on the steps of the old Capitol "Circle" when it still had parking spaces.
I live in Florida now and sure do miss my mountains and the view of the river from the windows on the gallery floor! It is the most beautiful capitol building I have ever visited and I have seen quite a few! It will always be my home.
