Big Bend Golf Course
Designed with every skill level in mind, this public 18-hole, par 71 golf course is located along the Coal River. Big Bend Golf Course features tree lined fairways, large greens, and water comes into play on three holes.
I thin its a nice course all in all. Not great, but nice. I have read the reviews from the people on this site. The truth to the matter is, the ones who write the bad reviews are the ones who think they should be on the tour with Tiger Woods as well. They picture themselves even up with him as they round the 17th hole. But, after they get to the club house and tally thier scores, there isnt much left to blame the 14 over par score on except the course. I mean after all, they have already blamed everything from trains to old cars and dogs and whatever else they could blame for the slice or hook that put thier ball in the trees or river. What else is left ? Just man up and play....your not the pro you think you are.
The last time I played this course, just as I was swinging, an air horn pierced the scene. Needless to say, the other players thought this was hilarious, especially when I couldn't even find my ball. It turns out there's a railroad adjacent to the course. Be forewarned.
This course is too far off the beaten path. It would be different if it had a nice atmosphere, but it doesn't. It's like playing golf in a freight yard. No one I know goes here. Southridge, Hurricane, Poca and Institute offer much better experiences. With the decline in economic fortunes of the area, even the once-exclusive private country clubs now welcome the public. These clubs have beautiful courses and are remarkably affordable! My rating is only one star, but for some reason the Yahoo site wouldn't let me rate this course with one star.
Big Bend is named for its location along the Coal River. I've always thought the topography made the course special. After playing many other courses, I know it is. Even on the hottest summer day, Big Bend is pleasant. By comparison, other courses under the same weather conditions are sweltering. If you love to play golf but refrain from doing so on the hottest days, come out to Big Bend.
As you travel down the street toward the golf course, on nearly any afternoon, you can see plumes of smoke from trash being burned by those living nearby. The stench invariably ruins any attempt to enjoy a game. As the previous reviewer noted, who wants to put up with that?
