A visit to Beckley would not be complete without a visit to one on my favorite restaurants anywhere. We love The Char. I especially love the double Brascioli served with a stuffed potato and a side of spaghetti! There just isn't anything better! It is so tender and tasteful! Perhaps the landscaping does need some attention, but who cares with food this good!
Unfortunately, if you have any kind of dietary needs other than the average individual, this is not the place to go. The steak had a seasoning with MSG! Given the number of people who have reactions to MSG, then it is unbelievable this is not disclosed on the menu and we were not told until we received the steak and asked. I also have a wheat allergy and unfortunately there must have been some in the broccoli soup (I asked but not sure I can trust the answer as no) as I was very sick afterward. Restaurants of this caliber have the responsibility to recognize dietary requirements or at the very least, not use artificial or flavor enhancing ingredients, but I got the feeling this establishment would rather hide things and could really care less. This was the most disappointing meal we have received in the past 5 years and certainly not worth the cost.
I was recently at a wedding reception dinner and the service was extremely poor. Too bad since I had always heard good things about this restaurant. Apparently, no wait staff had been scheduled to handle our party (again a wedding reception dinner)and there were only three servers on staff that night for the entire restaurant that was filled to capacity and then some. For a restaurant as reputable as The Char, one would not expect to experience this type of problem. After waiting 45 minutes or more we finally were served one small plate of appetizers for 13 people who were seated at our table. Then another 45 minutes passed and the waitress asked if we were ready to order. Everyone at the table was somewhat dumbfounded because we had never even been shown a menu. When we finally got our food (more than 2 hours after we first arrived) it was excellent, but the overall experience left me feeling like I'll never go back.
The restaurant is very small and crowded, people bump into you while your eating and all the staff runs around. The service was good. I had the crab cakes, and I have had crab cakes everywhere. I asked before ordering if they were 100 lump crab meat, she said 'yes'. Nope it was worse than wal-marts crab cakes, and it was swimmer crab =not good crab meat. Just beware. Recommend the Oak supper club in pipestem, good evironment wonderful food!
On a recent trip through Beckley, a friend treated me to a wonderfully enjoyable evening at the Char. I followed his recommendations and ordered fried olives and brascioli. Both were perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious! The Char's atmosphere is pleasant and unhurried. Our server, Steve, was helpful, polished and friendly. I would definitely recommend a meal at the Char when in southern West Virginia!
Years ago, my family went to The Char for special occasions when we were in Beckley. I loved the setting. The food was outstanding and the service impecccable. My father passed away in June. During a visit to the area for a family reunion, we took a shot at getting into he restaurant.
The beautiful pond is now choked with vegetation. The landscpaing at the large scenic window was overgrown.
Our black plates at the table were covered with some sort of white dust. We swept that away and settled in for dinner with hopes the night would improve.
Our service was good, no question. I felt the prices were reaching for the area, however. The special shrimp chowder awas average at best, and frankly I can only say the food during the main meal as a whole was average. The desserts we had were made outside the restaurant and were quite good.
I still have the memories of a really great restaurant, but I think average or above average is the best I can say now of the place. I will try it again, however.
I still get amazed by this place everytime me and my girlfriend visit this fabulous restaurant. New owners have taken over, and the food and service hasn't changed at all. These kind people make you feel right at home. The food is consistently awesome, and the waiters and waitresses are top notch. We had dinner last night and Melissa treated us to one of the most romantic dinners we've had. We will continue to drive an hour for a dinner of this magnitude. And we found out that they will no longer be closed for the month of January!! Just go there and give it a try, you will be amazed! Thanks to you all for a very memorable romantic atmosphere and great service. See you soon! Jon and Kim
Just visited The Char restaurant and the food was wonderful. It is a nice upscale restaurant with great steaks. If you are celebrating a special occasion then this is the place to go in Beckley. Don't forget dessert. The bread pudding is fabulous.
This is the best restaurant in Beckley, WV. That said, it is not a 5 star establishment. The food is good, but mostly average. The service is excellent, but the atmosphere is lacking. New owners have just recently taken over, so maybe new blood will help it to earn the rating that it gets by default of being the only upscale place in town.
