Fort Monroe Casemate Museum
This active military installation was famed during the Civil War as the \"Freedom Fort\" by African Americans escaping from slavery. General Benjamin Butler, refusing to return runaway slaves, kept them as \"Contrabands\" of war, assuring their freedom. Fort Monroe's role in the Civil War is depicted at this museum which contains Confederate President Jefferson Davis' prison cell.
I enjoyed the museum with it's many great displays. It encompasses the rich history of the area and how the Civil War was virtually planned here. Fort Monroe was not the only fort to be on that piece of land and the museum tells all through the "casemates" or cells in a fort wall. The museum is free and open to the public. The giftshop is at the end with many items to choose from. If you are planning a trip in the historic triangle, stop by the Casemate Museum first, not only for the history lesson, but the gift shop is A LOT cheaper than the other places for the same items. Tours are available (and free) by calling 757-788-3391. Donations help keep this great historic fort alive, please visit and you'll enjoy it just as much as I have.
The museum is in a portion of the wall of the fort. When you walk through it, you see how the fort has changed over the years. It has a lot of information to read at each display, and if you try to read all or most of it, it will take about 3 hours.
It was neat to find out just how important the fort was to the outcome of the civil war.
