Best for XC skiing, fall leaf show

The Trapp Family Lodge is a good hotel, located in a superb setting. We have had a guest house time share there for over 20 years and have noticed a definite decline in the main lodge facilities. Rooms are old fashioned and need refreshing. The dining room is excellent, if expensive. Austrian inspired continental food is featured. Not a place for dieters. I've had many meals in the Trapp Lodge dining room and have only had food poisoning twice, both from seafood meals. No adjustment was made to the bill despite complaints. Those gripes being filed, the XC ski trails are the best in the East and are very well maintained. Miles of trails of moderate to high difficulty challenge even experienced skiers, yet there are trails suitable for the rankest beginners. Classical and skating styles are both supported. Connecting trails to other XC and downhill ski venues are well marked. When you tire of trails and slopes, there is a new and well appointed health spa.
The best advice is to go there for the skiing, tolerate the lodgings, and feast in the excellent eateries in Stowe. If you are a skier, it is definitely worth the price. If you go there for a getaway hotel, it is not.
