Galveston Island Outdoor Musicals, Galveston

I traveled from Vidor to Galveston every summer growing up (age 8-16) ish just to spend my birthday weekend with my family and the highlight...the outdoor amphitheater musicals. The outdoors made musicals like South Pacific truely alive! I felt the performaces were as professional as New York's but gave us a more romantic sensation being in the outdoor environment. I was to continue this tradition with my own two children and refuse to do it indoors when I can do the same ol' same ol' here in Houston, or cheaper and closer up seats with just as professional shows at the Lutcher Stark in Beaumont, TX. I am devastated that I can't go back. I didn't even realize they moved them indoors and for all the years that I went, never once was weather an issue - nothing but perfect beach August nighttimes to dream and feel alive just because of an outdoor amphitheater. People knew they were outdoors and were always prepared with suntan lotion until it was dark, and bug spray for night. Listening to the ocean waves' constant ebb and flow, almost seeming to pulse with the rhythm of the songs and dances on stage...is gone...I just pray not forever. Bring outdoor musical theaters back and I'll be the first to buy season tickets. The OUTDOOR show should, must go on!

When I was a kid, my family attended the OUTDOOR musicals yearly and I LOVED them! The sets were great and the shows were outstanding with a very large entertaining cast. My husband and I just came from seeing The Music Man, and I was very disappointed- the show was indoors in what seemed more like a sporting event seating setting, the sets were little to none (a video screen portraying background images) and the cast was much smaller than past shows- one girl even played 3 different characters throughout the show. It seemed like we were attending a college production rather than a Broadway production. We probably won't be going back unless they decide to move it back to the outdoors with the grand sets and casting.

we too saw wizard of oz. being hot & sweaty, fighting off misqutoes, wind a blowing constantly. it was great. being outdoors was unique . there's a lot of indoor theaters...galveston had something going with that outdoor one,,,at least we have the memories.

great experience, seems like the producers and actors have put a lot of love, hard work and energy. I would recommend people visiting and galvestonians to go and see the awesome shows.

No more outdoor productions. Takes away a lot of tradition and fun. Very sorry to see it go away. Used to come every summer.

Well, I was searching for the outdoor theater, and was turning up unlucky, I took my son to see the Wizard of Oz about 8 years ago and it was so fabulous, and very kid friendly. I loved the fact that people were wearing shorts and tennis shoes at a play/musical.. I am so disappointed to learn it has moved indoors, I won't be taking my (now) four kids to sit in an airconditioned theater, where is the fun in that.

Great family entertainment! Nice relaxed environment. Prefer the indoor performance due to our crazy local weather. Very talented bunch. Enjoyed this show as much as the high dollar ones I've attended. Be sure to check them out!
