Funyaking NOT SO MUCH FUN
By ,
Didn't really have a great time, we were in Funyaks with the company of 3 rafts, it as a very slow pace to the point I ended up paddleing up river to wait on them, My funyak kept going flat and the pump they brought was broke into three pieces and never really ever pumped the FUNyak back up, Snack was indulgent trial mix from Walmart and Orange Slices. After trying to navigate a class III in a half flat Funyak (which is not very fun) and finally getting to the pickup point, was then told that we had to help load the rafts and funyaks. But wait there is more, the short bus that we road on was nasty and gas fumes would about make you high,.. But hey the weather was nice!

Ask for one of the more experienced guides!!
By ,
This was our first time whitewater rafting. We followed a more experienced guide down the river with another boat full of people. We worked ten times harder than the other boat to get down the river due the inexperience of our guide. All but one of us fell out of the boat because of the way we went through the rapids...sideways, backwards, etc. It was a fun day but exhausting. Not sure if we'll try this again.

Would Not Do This Again
By ,
We booked the "Economy" 1/2 day trip (it was to be shorter in time...no stops...) we were called late on the evening before and told that they messed up and put us an the "all day", this caused us to pay an extra day at our campsite and loose a day of our precious vacation because we wouldn't be able to make it to our next destanation on time. When we arrived (45 min early) it was SLOW getting registered, then they had a guide try to talk us into using "Funyaks" which we said NO to several times ( I don't think they had enough guides so they wanted more people in funyaks--which we could tell by the end of the trip were NOT fun). we were to be dressed and ready to go by 9:45 but we didn't leave until MUCH later. Our guide was not very good (we have done white water rafting in Montana with real whitewater rafting guides--which was GREAT) he didn't know how to give paddling directions (EVERY comand was either "all forward" or "all back"). He kept saying how great the water level was, but we got stuck on rocks 6 times out 10. Our guide took us down over half of the rapids BACKWARDS...what fun is this...my kids were SO dissapointed!! The reason the "all day" trip takes longer is because they take the funyaks...and the whole group has to wait at each rapids for them to go down (you have to "babysit" the funyaks and this takes SOOO long). To make matters worse the raft was not a self bailing boat (like the other raft companies use) and WE had to do the bailing!!!--to make matters worse we had a HOLE in our boat that the guide knew about (he said they knew but didn't have time to patch it!!--so WE bailed water the whole trip) Be aware if you use this company that: 1. you will have to help unload the rafts and reload them. 2. the equipment is OLD (did I forget to mention the cracked helmets and heavy mildew on the lifejackets). 3. you will have a long bus ride both ways Several people on the bus ride back cheered and clapped yelling "yea!! it's finally over." ( I think that sums it up well). Do yourself a favor and buy an all day pass at the US National Whitewater Rafting Center (for about 50 bucks) in Charlotte, NC

Excellent Adventure!!!
By ,
This was not our first trip down the Nolichuckey, nor will it be our last. We have been with other companies but we will not raft with anyone but Cherokee Adventures again. We have been in high water and low water this time we got higher water. Our guide (who we had in low water as well) was not a disapointment, as always he made the trip fun and exciting while keeping us safe. He made it clear that our saftey and fun were his top most priority. The food was the best out of the other companies we had been with and the guides were far more entertaining and well trained . We would recomend this company to anyone and we tell all our friends and co workers about it. The scenery was amazing it is by far the best looking of all the rivers we have rafted (and they are many) A definate must if you are in the eastern US. The price was fair , more than fair for the trip we recieve. The campgrounds and equipment could use some updating but that is the only bad thing that could be said. I look forward to our next trip which we are already planning for next year. I would highly recommend asking for Lauren as a guide. He will not disapoint you.

Check the water level before you go
By ,
This trip was terrible! Our group signed up for a 1/2 day trip because we were in the area for a wedding and had left our dogs in the cabin. We called the morning of the trip and they told us that everything was good. Water levels, etc. So I believe we did our due diligence prior to the 1:20min drive out there from the Boone NC location where we were staying. Once we arrived, they said that the 1/2 day trips would now take 4 to 6 hours due to the water levels. Once one the river we spent most of our time watching the guides evacuate people from their rafts do to rocks ect., that were exposed. The trip really took about 8 hours and then they expected you to load all of the rafts on top of the buses. Horrible deal!!!

Fun Experience
By ,
Our group had a lot of fun on the Nolichucky and thought our guides did an excellent job. The water level was a little low, causing us to get caught on the rocks a few times, but overall it was a good experience. The price was affordable and I would very likely do it again.

Highly reccomend them
By ,
Really good experience for the money I paid. I took the all day trip on the upper nolichucky. The scenery was amazing, the food was good, and the rafting excellent. The only thing I have to complain about was the water level. At times it was hard to navigate around cuz the water level was real low. However, the guides gave us the option of using funyaks which didn't require as much difficulty in navigating the rapids. They're a lot more fun and don't cost any extra.

Unsafe and Scary
By ,
In August my group paid for a full day rafting trip on the upper Nolichucky with an overnight stay in a private bungalow for six people. It was a terrible dissapointment. The water level was too low for the trip to proceed. All the other rafting companies in the area decided the water was too low to take customers out that day. I know this because we were the only people on the river and our guides even admitted that no other company would have taken us out. All six of us have been on several full day rafting trips many times. We have never had an experience like this. We spent almost all day stuck on rocks and we were lucky to get to the put out before dark. We were terrified that we would still be on the river when the sun went down. We were prepared to paddle and work hard all day, but this trip was more than we bargained for it. It was too much physically and lasted way to long. We were exhausted to the point that we didn’t even feel safe. We also feel strongly that there were not enough guides for a safe and fun trip. There were at least 20 people. Four people were in a raft and the rest were in funyacks. There were only 3 guides. The group became so spread out that there many times that there was no guide in site. I fell out in a rapid and there was no guide anywhere around. Luckily another person on the trip caught my funyack and I was able to recover without injury. For the last 45 minutes of the trip there was a group of 5 of us that never laid site on a guide or the rest of the group. We were totally on our own. By the time we got back and turned in our equipment the restaurant was closed. We planned to get back at a reasonable time and have a nice leisurely dinner with the full menu. I cannot express how disappointing the entire experience was. It was up to the management/owners to make the call to cancel the trip and to ensure adequate staffing. We would have been happy to take a rain check or a refund and reschedule for a more suitable time. Letting us go out on the river and have a terrible and unsafe day was very poor judgement. Next year we will back to raft the Nolichucky, but we will use a different company.
