Ripley's Believe it or Not! Museum
You'll find three floors of outstanding artifacts, oddities, and unique exhibits from around the world at this museum with many of the items collected by Ripley during the 1930's and 1940's. Some of the items you'll see are authentic medieval torture devices and authentic shrunken heads.
It is an interesting way to spend an hour or so if you are really into things like the guinness book of world records, but for the most part it is very average and overpriced. Most of the museum is pictures and props with information to read about them. Very little is hands on. There are alot of steps involved, you climb about twenty steps to each level, so if you have any problems maneuvering up or down steps you will want to avoid this place. Unfortunately for this place, most of the items they have on display are old news, as much of it is available online, or on television. The big draw to this place is the history of Ripley himself, as the museum tells you about his travels and varied love life. My ten year old son was not as thrilled as I expected him to be, but I do have to say I am glad I experienced it at least once, if for no other reason than for the history lesson. Take alot of money, the souvenier wax hands are upwards of fifteen to thirty dollars, and the game room downstairs isnt cheap. Ive gone three times with various people at different times and none of the pay machines worked. They all took my money and didnt give anything in return. For example, the fortune machine, picture your children machine, and the compatibility machine. When I told the cashier about it taking my money and not working, they always said that they cannot give refunds so I was just out of luck. Most recent visit was in 2008... I recommend the ripleys haunted mansion or the aquarium if you are looking for something interesting to children within the ripley family of attractions.
It was ok when we went the first time but it's not something you would want to do more than once. My kids were 6 and 4 at the time and they didn't really enjoy it much. We go to Gatlinburg every summer but have only been here once...that was enough. I would suggest spending your money on something else. The Ripley's 4D moving theatre is a lot of fun. We do that every year and our kids love it!
Then Ripley's is a must for you. I loved it and thought that the price wasn't too much, especially if you do a Ripley's bundle which saves you money. I can't imagine how some of the reviewers got through the odditorium in 15 minutes, they had to just look at pictures and displays but not read anything. It probably took us about an hour and a half or more to get through it. That's us reading everything (we are pretty fast readers). There are plenty of things that are just amazing, plenty of macabre displays, things made of skulls and bones. There are also tons of interactive things for kids of all ages. This might not be the best place to take children that can't read or aren't interested in learning.
The clerk said it would take 2-2/12 hrs to tour Ripley's-it took us 45 minutes. This place is a typical tourist trap. The most interesting display was of the tallest man in the world. The rest of the place is a joke, old, dusty displays and lots of uninteresting photographs, many of Ripley himself. Boring!
i went once as a kid and my boyfriend and i went last year. it was fun the first time but things were a little boring the second time around. it's a little expensive but it's worth going once. i would go again when i have kids that are old enough. it's something neat for kids to experience.
I have been to Ripley's in TN several times as a child and now as an adult. I would reccomend this attraction to others you and your kids will both be impressed by the displays and interesting facts you see and learn along the way. Ripley's has great curb appeal and it only gets better when you go inside.
if you like seeing cool stuff go but if you have children 5 or under it will be a bit scary. It is alot of fun and you can make a wax hand, but it takes 45 minuts so if you have kids don't do the wax hands.
